Trying to pick stocks out of the S&P (SPY) and the NASDAQ (QQQ) is largely a fools game.

That’s why I’ve got people to do it for me.

The small and even mid-cap game is very risky. Even professional money managers can get taken to the cleaners.

Small caps, which for decades and decades produced better average returns than the S&P.
are now a swampy mess.

It used to be, a company could not go public unless it had a few years in business, and a record showing profit or profit potential.

These days, and eight year old with a lemonade stand, or a couple con artists working out of their mama’s basement can get a listing.

My portfolio is managed at the mutual fund level. As part of my retirement benefit, I have my 401k managed by professionals. The 401k is invested in about 25 to 30 different mutual funds. About 27% in domestic stock, 12% in foreign stock, 52% in various bond funds, 8% in short term funds and 1% in other funds.

My wife’s 401k is managed in a similar fashion. We also have a sizeable brokerage account invested in money market funds.

We are well diversified.

Following the quick tariff related downturn, we are now back in the positive for our investments.
