The Interior Department announced Monday that TotalEnergies agreed to what is essentially a refund of its leases for projects off the coasts of North Carolina and New York, and will invest the money in a liquefied natural gas export terminal in Texas and other fossil fuel projects instead
I don’t don’t know why people cheer for this. A domestic energy project has died to open spigots for foreigners.
Apparently . . .
Offshore turbines are typically visible from the shore if they are located closer than 40 miles (approx. 64 km), turning an pristine natural view into urban/industrial eyesore.
I cannot verify that argument but I will call it plausible.
I’ve seen in the nuclear thread that conservatives are capable of understanding the intrinsic value of energy infrastructure, even when it’s not the best use of capital. But somehow that all gets forgotten for offshore wind.
This wind field in North Carolina is too expensive for the taxpayer, but just south of the border, they’re flirting with another go at VC summer expansions courtesy of the taxpayer.
I get the math of paying the penalty. While I dont have a problem with the federal government getting involved with these projects, I would say a heck of a lot of due diligence has to take place before any taxpayers money is paid and if it goes ahead should only be US companies.
Remember when Der Trumpmeister went off half cocked about offshore wind farms causing humpback whales to beach themselves? Mmmneah, that was a stretch. I wonder who fed him that claptrap?
I don’t know if turbines cause that. (In my opinion, the environmentalists pushing it don’t know with scientific certainty.)
And I don’t care about that in the context of my opposition to federal government subsidizing these things. (PS: My opposition holds true whether they are offshore or land-based, for the record.)
Why did Trump latch onto it? I think he’ll try to grab every possible angle of support in his opposition to them.
But you’re cool with the federal government investing in new oil and gas projects, which is what Trump is going to repurpose the funds that were going to go to the French company for?
Cutting our losses by getting out of the project reminds me of a time when I was a landlord in good ol’ Massachusetts. A tenant was playing the system and stiffing me on rent. He was behind two full months (at $400/month) and knew that the process would take at least three more months before I could even begin to evict him.
I offered him $500 to vacate by the end of the week. He took it. I cut my losses and moved on.
not in favor of junking existing projects and paying a go-away fee but offshore wind has been replaced by its competition, solar and LNG as they are cheaper. Even on-shore wind has slowed down because of this. Same reason nuclear is on the sidelines, it can’t compete on price.
Off shore wind is a money pit. Oil and Gas, especially a new LNG export terminal on the Texas Coast, is a cash cow for domestic jobs (tax dollars generated), and increased exports (improved trade balance and taxes).
