German Chancellor Angela Merkel stunned politicians and citizens throughout the European Union Monday; officially announcing she will not seek re-election when her mandate ends in 2021.

According to the Guardian, the longtime leader made her decision after “disastrous” local elections in multiple German states, saying the results were a “clear signal that things can’t go on as they are.”

“She said she would not stand as party leader at the CDU conference in December and at the next elections in 2021 she would not seek another term as chancellor, announcing her complete withdrawal from politics after that date,” writes the Guardian.

Merkel is largely blamed by her political opponents for the current immigration crisis sweeping Europe after she unveiled her “open door” policy; accepting a large number of migrants from Syria, the Middle East, and Africa.
