I had a couple of friends from home call me up about this the day it happened. Damned disturbing.
New Mexicans in general tend to be pretty libertarian in that they just don’t care what you’re doing as long as you aren’t bothering anyone else. Unfortunately that attitude can lead to things like this going on right under everyone’s nose and nobody taking notice of it.
The article says that the land owners, the Badgers, tried to evict these people off of their land but a judge refused. This isn’t going to look good on his résumé. I wonder why he made that decision and what he thinks now?
So I do nothing while I watch you shoot the person.

His own son died apparently, they have yet to determine the COD.
The actual landowners they were squatting on had tried repeatedly to evict them but the courts chose to side with the squatters.

I spent a great deal of time in that part of the state from Springer to Eagle Nest and on up to Capulin, Raton, and Las Vegas. I love it up there but there are some really far, far, far out folks up there and generally they keep to themselves.
From talking to a couple of friends back home apparently he’d been up there for a year or so with his little Jihadi family.
He was wanted for kidnapping his son in GA for 9 months and had been stopped in AL for a traffic violation back in Dec but somehow they didn’t connect the dots.
