When did this ok-hand gesture become a White Power symbol? If some raggedy KKK members used it at one of their pitifully small rallies doesn’t mean its a universal sign for anything but “A-okay”!

A simple search on the interwebs yields that it is the second part of a two handed gesture of sign language for the letter W and letter P. Which when done poorly looks like an upside down ok sign. I will continue to use the ok sign as I am not a white supremicist…I am 53 years old and am not so childish as to actually throw signs with my hands!

The “OK” hoax was actually just one in a series of hoaxes in which 4channers (and members of other, similar places on the Internet such as 8chan and Reddit) have tried to take innocuous items, symbols or gestures and falsely attribute white supremacist meanings to them in order to fool liberals and get them to spread such false messages.

One 2017 4chan thread devoted itself to brainstorming the next such hoax. “We need to make some pics that are warning parents about what the dab really means and spread it around,” wrote one 4channer (the “dab” is a popular dance move). Another 4channer suggested spreading the notion that clapping was “anti-feminist.”

One of the more successful of these recent 4chan hoaxes, also originating in February 2017, was the concept that white supremacists were drinking milk to show “the superiority of the white race” and the “purity of white milk.” One hoaxer trying to convince the Anti-Defamation League “explained” that “they are chugging milk in front of people of color, quoting racist books and phrases and supposed statistics about people of color being lactose intolerant.” A number of media websites bought into the milk hoax.

Look. People use ok every day. I use ok to signal to people while I’m on phone that it’s ok to come in my office. I’m not childish enough to us it or others in a derogatory way. But go ahead and continue to be purposefully obtuse and childish.

Trump’s reaction to the Central park 5, and the birtherism of Obama, is more than a product of his time.

Thanks for the info I never heard of 4chan but it doesn’t change the obvious that it was manufactured by some raggedy KKK bigot/racist as the article states:

This is not true. In certain parts of middle and southern Europe (although not in Spain or Portugal) the gesture is considered offensive. The connotation of “zero” or “worthless” in France and Belgium. In some Mediterranean countries, such as Turkey, Tunisia, and Greece, the Middle East, and parts of Brazil and Germany, it can be an insult “you are an ■■■■■■■” or slang for the anus itself, or a reference to homosexuality.

In the Arab world, the sign represents the evil eye, and used as a curse.

It’s not a universal “positive” hand gesture.

Reaction to the “OK” symbol hoax was so widespread in the spring and summer of 2017 that a number of people on the far right began deliberately to use the gesture—typically making the sign while posing for photographs uploaded to social media—in order to continue the trolling and spread it further.

Over the year and a half since the original hoax campaign began, ADL has tracked its usage by a variety of figures on the far right, including some well-known white supremacists, though it seems to be even more popular among the so-called alt lite. Use of the “OK” gesture has spread beyond the far right and can now also be found within the broad community of mainstream Donald Trump supporters—some of whom seem to have no idea of its origins.

Even though its usage has expanded and evolved, it still seems primarily intended to trigger or troll people on the left and cause them to react, although some white supremacists have also used it—generally jokingly—among themselves.

It is primarily intended to mean “everything is ok”, at least in the English speaking world.
Monitoring its use is meaningless unless you interview the person to see what they meant. Did they count Obamas use as a white power sign?
Its origins, by the way, were not related to 4 channel. Its origins were with signaling “OK” and is many, many years prior to 2017. Its misuse may have originated with 4 channel and has been greatly expanded with those who want to interpret it incorrectly, as attributing that meaning to people who are dark skinned, half Mexican, and a descendant of a holocaust survival.
The OP author has no idea what that kid meant before he condemned its use.

A simple google search shows Obama using the sign on multiple occasions, as have other prominent blacks. Are they White Supremacists?

The backward swastika, in parts of Asia, probably. But a few extremists on both sides of the internet are not the same as the German nation in WWII.
