National League integrated black player before the American League. And at a greater percentage.
There are those who suggest that the tremendous dominance by the National League in the All Star games from the late 50s through the 70s was due to the higher percentage of black players in the NL.
I’ll say that the 60e and 70s broke the back of racism in baseball. You might still find racism at the individual level – in baseball and elsewhere – but not at the organizational level. Each organization wants to field the best team possible.
What I see in baseball at the developmental level (pee wee, little league, high school, college, etc.) is a noticeable absence of black kids. (And yes, I see a lot. I have grandsons who are on traveling teams now. I go to a lot of games and see a lot of teams. My oldest just committed to a baseball scholarship offer.) There ate tons of Hispanic kids. Plenty of white kids. Few blacks.
Does racism at the developmental level cause this? Or are the black athletes opting for football and basketball instead?
It’s just a guess, but I think baseball has fallen out of favor with a lot of black kids.
And if the flow of upcoming athletes is sparse in black representation, that’s going to be reflected in the professional rosters.
Black participation in baseball is way down compared to where it used to be, but it’s not because of racism. Sports like basketball and football have taken over, and there are just too many other distractions.
The ultimate celebrity soap opera for men, and the ultimate team sport. Can’t beat these two when appealing to kids. Invasion games just work better as TV programs.
During baseball segregation, Hispanics were allowed to play if their skin tone was light enough. Players with darker skin tones were banned no matter how they identified.
We have a grandson that plays HS Baseball here in south Florida. Many of the teams have a good representation of Hispanic players. It’s not unusual to be sitting in the stands watching the games and many of the parents are speaking Spanish but not surprising, there are many Spanish speaking families in SFL.
One team at another HS has perhaps one or two white players, the rest Hispanico. And as one would expect, they’re damn good.
I’ve noticed the HS football teams are majority black. No big deal really, I just think it’s fantastic that HS students are involved in athletics.
