White Straight Christian Male Johnny starts in an SWE role for 300k.
Black Gay Atheist Female Desiree starts in a SWE role for 300k.
After one year… they both have performance reviews. Each are rated 1-4, with 4 being the highest and thus commands the highest comp adjustments.
Johnny gets rated a 2… he missed a few goals. That 2 gets him a 4% raise and 20% bonus.
Desiree gets a 4. She hit every goal and then some. That 4 gets her 10% raise and 35% bonus.
They both have the same start… but performance drive comp from that point forward.

They both start from the same line for the same role. What is wrong with that? You said hiring is a guess… “best” is subjective before you see how they produce while on the jobs
Raises and bonuses are on a sliding scale… you if you have 8 OKRs for the year… and you hit half… you will probably get rated a 2

That’s a goalpost move from the original point that families would be better off aspiring for LESS materialism.
But Madison Avenue has done a champion job of instilling that upscale goalpost in the culture.

The vast majority of fatherless households are by choice. Maybe not the choice of both parents, but certainly the choice of at least one. Right from the start, more and more kids are getting born out of wedlock. That’s a choice of one or both parents. That’s our culture today.
