Yes it’s very simple to spin anything into a dark conspiracy theory.
Like vaccinations, global economic forum, etc etc etc.
Was that an attempt at self reflection?

It looks like the Pentagon is already walking back ridiculously optimistic expectations in accordance with the Rand recommendation from the OP:
That is good first step. Or is it a dark conspiracy theory?
Not uncommon in war, though.
Iran-Iraq War is a good example. Over 1 million dead. Entire portions of western Iran and eastern Iraq completely destroyed. Mass use of chemical weapons by the Iraqis.
War ended in 1988 at the exact same borders it started from.
When did they say they could?
Isn’t that what’s required for a walk back?
Training the Ukrainians on using western tanks won’t be the hard part.
The hard part is training and refitting their logistics network on supporting them.
The Leopard 2A5 is the best tank for Ukraine, far more so than the Abrams. Logistics training wouldn’t be that much more difficult than the existing T-72s and T-80UDs the Ukrainian support units were already trained on.
The Abrams is a great tank, but it requires a fundamental rethink on armored logistics and maintenance.
Which is why I think it’s third on the priority list. The Leopard 2A5 is the most important since it fits Ukraine’s logistics the best. The Challenger II would be second. The Abrams a distant third.
But regardless, considering the Russians are now relying on ancient T-62s taken out of storage, they won’t be competitive with any of the western options.
The one tank they had available that could… at least put up a fight was the T-90. And those that are left are being hoarded back in Russia after losing a significant portion of them to Javelins and Ukrainian artillery.
The Russians wasted their T-90s. They should have been held in reserve to be brought out in case Ukraine was able to obtain significant numbers of western tanks. Which is what looks like is about to happen. They’ve already been alotted more than 50 Leopards and it seems like they’ll end up with more than a 100 in this first batch alone.
One Leopard 2A5 equals about 6 T-62s in terms of combat effectiveness.
Look at the staff.
Saved.
