If private businesses can't be trusted, then why not have government run everything?

The Biden/Harris talking point essentially is that these greedy businesses are doing everything that they can to screw the consumer. Because they cannot be trusted the only hope for us little people is for government to swoop in and save the day!

https://www.msn.com/en-us/money/companies/kamala-harris-wants-to-stop-food-price-gouging-what-it-means-for-grocery-stocks/ar-AA1oRAOP

Clearly one can make the argument that government shouldn’t just stop at grocery stores either. Furthermore, one can argue where does the greed stop? Why trust any business, is it not the desire of every business the gouge us little people? It would seem that the only way to a truly equitable society is through government.

Why were these companies less greedy for the decade before Biden/Harris?

Scapegoat, much.

First paragraph in referenced article:

“The Kamala Harris campaign says she plans to impose the first-ever federal ban on price gouging in the food and grocery industries. Don’t expect it to move the needle much on inflation.

They won’t stop at grocery stores. Harris was deadly serious when she talked about “equal outcomes” on multiple occasions, so this is just the natural first step.

Attacking “greedy” businesses plays to many of the ignorant masses and indoctrinated college student types. Just keep piling on regulation after regulation after regulation so that all that remains are just the few mega corporations who can buy off the corrupt politicians!

But evidence that gouging is a big contributor to higher food costs is hard to find.

Can someone help me out here?

What is this quote in the referenced article trying to convey?

Wasn’t this sort of thing implemented in Venezuela under Chavez?

That’s longhand for they’re full of it.

Yep. Regulatory socialism. It’s brilliant.

Norway South?

It was implemented in the US by Nixon.

Go back and study history and see for yourself. Didn’t work then, won’t work now.

…and here’s how it’s supposed to work. If the prices are too high, a competitor will come along and make it for less. If you don’t see that happen, that’s probably because the government is already involved and screwing up this simple, capitalistic system. Government…STAY OUT.

THE GOVERNMENT’S JOB IS TO PROTECT OUR SOUTHERN BORDER FROM INVASION. HOW ARE THEY DOING AT THAT? THAT IS REPRESENTATIVE OF THIS ENTITY WHO WANTS TO GET INVOLVED IN THIS!

FIX WHAT YOU BROKE.

I would love to see her or any other lib accuse colleges of price gouging!

I was alive when Nixon tried it. Most of our resident Libs weren’t. But they were alive when Chavez wrecked the thriving economy in Venezuela.

The answer to everything is more government power.

That last time we had serious price controls was under Carter for gasoline.

Expect bare shelves and possibly long lines for some items if Harris implements her proposal.

The article makes the false assumption that the problem is at the level of the grocery stores. It higher up the food chain so to speak with the manufacturers. They used inflation due to covid to pad their bottom line. Some of these companies have seen record profits by as much as 75%. That’s not inflation. It’s price gouging.

I’m with you, government should not only run the grocery stores but manufactures as well.

I don’t think government should run either, but it is within their responsibility to at least investigate those that are ripping off the consumer.

What are they waiting on?

If we are being “ripped off”, where are the investigations?
