I am beginning to think that we have a policing problem in this country

You act like I’m some kid who doesn’t get gallows humor. You are way off base on that score kiddo.

I stated plainly that some of what I saw went well beyond that and it did. I have no “axe” to grind here, I simply reported what I experienced.

I have seen much trauma in over four decades of construction work. Several deaths, hundreds and hundreds of stitches, one guy popped his eyeball out of his head, broken limbs and evan back, my coworker and mentor was buried alive and died. I’m scratching the surface here just with things from work. Just as much or more I’ve lived outside of work, I ain’t some kid who doesn’t get gallows humor.

Enough with the condescension already, you don’t know what you are talking about.

No what I’m saying that what you are up in arms over is absolutely normal. If its not obvious I happen to have feet in the world you speak of. I know very well what kind of things get joked about constantly and it makes many of things you talk about tame. I also spend hours a week in the emergency room working so I’m quite familiar with it too.

Your trauma in construction work is real I’m sure but for your not really dealing with people other than co-workers on a regular basis. Sure you might have clients you build who occasionally have unrealistic expectations but thats far different than nearly every single moment of interaction with the public reinforcing to you how stupid and often evil people can be. Its why the gallows humor that cops, doctors, nurses, paramedics, etc develop isn’t easily understandable to the outside world and why it can seem outrageous at times.

For instance is joking about emulating fighter pilots who put kills on their cockpit wrong for cops who have shot and killed someone? Wanting to put a skull and crossbones on the police car. To the outside world it would sound horrifying. To the cop who shot and killed someone its a way of coping and telling his co-workers that he’s okay (even if he’s really not) rather than show weakness or PTSD over it. BTW, that cop was me.

Its getting better overall but its also case by case depending on the dept. As recently as 15 years ago, my incident was nearly 20, coming forward with your mental health struggles, even if they were PTSD from an on duty incident, were a guaranteed way to lose your job. Can’t have any “loose cannons” with mental issues floating about after all.

But I know I still would hesitate to put my income, ability to support my family, and career on the line trusting that a dept would do right by me. To many stories nationwide of cops who did nothing wrong being forced out for “reasons” when they come forth with such struggle. I saw a story not long ago where an officer came forward with such and was fired within a year - the reasons on his paperwork were “going to his house” (he had stopped for 5 minutes to use the bathroom) and some other BS reason. It was obviously political.

Oh? Where’s the bill then?

He might have even done it deliberately to reinforce his cover.

Right. And so the officers were at risk of blowing the guys cover if they didn’t beat him up.

That would be pretty tough to do with under cover cops.

Delicious irony!

No, that literally means he ran as a Republican. Doesn’t make him one.

Hillary proclaimed herself to be a Democratic Socialist but she didn’t run as one.

It literally means republicans chose Donald trump to represent their party as it’s standard bearer. Donald trump is the leader of the republican party. If you don’t like that then there are other political parties that you can join.

That’s nice and has nothing to do with what Jack straw said:

"He was the republican nominee for POTUS. That literally means he is a republican.

I’m sure these people have a long list for him.

That’s nice.

Donald Trump is a Republican. I’m glad we figured that out.

You can deny reality all you want, but it’s pointless. It just makes you look foolish.

Yep, and Bernie ran as a straight up Socialist on the Democratic ticket. Political party and political philosophy are often not copasetic.

“…reinforcing to you how stupid and evil people can be.”

Honestly my line of work, & nobody on graveyard works with the general public, if you didn’t have a gallows or some sense of humor, you’d be a complete & total nut & probably get let go.

Unlike in the E R, where joking around may involve joking about the patients (that is, IMO, disturbing), it doesn’t involve the patients. There’s nothing amusing about a child being tested for an STD, or a baby’s first stool sample being tested for controlled substances, or a newborn being confirmed as positive for various analytes.

But if you didn’t have an ability to joke around, & it can get a bit sinister, you just wouldn’t last & would probably have to go to some daytime office job.
