This explanation only works in a vacuum where there wasn’t a world war that just ended.
Outside of a nuclear explosion in Eurasia Operation unthinkable would have cost as many American lives as island hopping in Japan.
And our ability to strike the USSR with the atomic bombs of the day were very limited.
It was long range bombers or nothing, and we wouldn’t have had air superiority over the USSR.
Even after they developed the bomb, we didn’t have good options to strike them. Not until missiles were developed.

Russia doesn’t have anywhere near the history or culture the West has that we can expect anything other than constant rivalry from them, absent huge changes that take decades to happen.
And Japan needed to be conquered before it became friendly.
This is why we study history…to try and envision the future as opposed to just ride by the seat of our pants and hope for the best.
