Is the corrupt oligarchy something new?
Or has it just become more apparent?
Are both political parties equally responsible?

No. One party fights privatization. Keeps us from going full Russia where connected oligarchs make stupid money owning public services.
Okay, are you saying that Democrats are less responsible for the mafia state?
If corrupt oligarchs run the government, I am not sure how privatization or government ownership makes much difference. It is more of a question of which pocket you put the loot into.
Aside from being the buzzword of the day, what does “mafia state” mean?
This video provides a starting point to understand the development of the US as a mafia state. The US intelligence (OSS) used the Sicilian mafia in WW2 to help with the invasion of Italy. The OSS and later the CIA then used connections to mafia-related drug trade to fund covert operations. This set-up bypassed oversight of congress and limited the control from the White House. A complex system of sham companies and the Vatican Bank laundered the money.
Here are links to two of the sources for references sited in the video.
Corrupt corporate interests have been driving US foreign policy overseas. Similar forces have taken control over politics inside the US as well.

The big guy has put a spin on mafia.
US history books rarely spend much time discussing the impact of the Cold War on Latin America, Asia, and Africa. The US approach was originally to support the colonial powers based in western Europe. Late it evolved into programs to undermine elected governments if they attempted to implement policies that were counter to the concerns of Washington. Frequently the results were US-backed coups to install military dictatorships or corrupt strongmen allied with the US. In many respects the same policies continue to this day.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. recently discussed his uncle’s work to direct efforts away from military intervention and towards economic development. While the US has largely abandoned Kennedy’s approach, China appears to be following Kennedy’s ideas with great success.
The One Horse Dog Face Pony Soldier Show?
Its no secret that many of the US attempts to control events in other countries over the last 100 years have backfired.
Every country acts out of self interest but the US with its vasts resources and global influence manages to â– â– â– â– things up on a bigger scale.
I have never understood the US attitude towards Cuba. Fidel Castro was a horrible human being and has the death of countless people on his hands but he continually gave the US a massive middle finger and they could do nothing about it which is sort of funny.
The American empire is basically a continuation of the British empire.
The CIA is acting in the tradition of the British East India Company as a for-profit, quasi-governmental instrument of imperialism and intrigue.
Good.
The difference is that the British East India Company eventually came under the control of the British parliament. The modern-day East India Companies run the national governments, not the other way around.
