Higher Education in America – too expensive, takes too much time, has a limited “shelf-life", and consists of a great deal of content that has limited practical value

Many jobs require a College degree. Many of these are entry level jobs at companies in various positons in a company that may not manufacture here in large volumes, but still have a lot of support needs. I do not understand why people arfue against a well educated populace. It makes no sense.

Unions are simly democracy in the workplace. Most countries in the EU, do not have a min. wage, because unions are strong, and ensure even fast food workers earn a living wage. And in the trades, workers do very well (Like we used to). And somehow, their economies are donng just fine, and companies are also doing well. And they have some of the best trained work force. We can do that here as well…but some seem to think CEO’s making 500-5000 times their average employee is A-OK.

Corps just got a huge tax break…yet the majority of those extra dollars are not going to the workers. The current corporate structure is designed to keep pay low, and profits very high…that needs to change If not…this cycle we are in is not going to change.

If college education is so vital please explain how college dropouts like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, and Mark Zuckerberg created three of the most successful companies in the world? By the way there are many examples of other college dropouts as well as people who did not go college at all who have created amazingly successful companies and businesses.

I will say this again the notion that many jobs require a college degree is a fallacy. Please detail how much in ones college coursework is applicable to entry level positions in things like sales, marketing, human resources, purchasing, administration, etc? The situation is that there is an over supply of college graduates, and given the choice employers will preferentially hire them over someone without a degree. If government deems it necessary for everyone to get a college degree than there will come a point where jobs like custodians, sanitation workers, cashiers, etc., will “require” a college degree.

Finally there is nothing in any of my posts about being against getting an education. One doesn’t need to sit in classroom for four years to get an education. Just go watch the movie Lorenzo’s Oil.

Anecdotal at best. And those guys all have something in common. White, males, from upper middle class familes. They had advantages that many who do not have those opportunities. And in many ways, one thing is also a factor: Luck. Knowing the right person, being in the rigfht place, and yes of course going for it and doing something. Good on them, but your logic, lacks logic.

Many companies will not look at a an applicant w/out a degree. That is not Government, that is the market today. I have a friend, 30 years in the Electronic manufacturing industry…no degree. Got laid off, could not find a job in the industry…why? no degree.
I do not agree with that, but that is the job market today. Unless one can get into a smaller company that is more felxible.

It is 2018. It is a fact, one with a degree, has a better chance of having a better career.
It is certainly possible to do well w/out one, Ido not have a degree, and I have been able to do well, although I know if I have to find a job, w/out a degree(I do not have a degree) it could be tough for me as well. Fingers crossed I wil not have to find that out.

Which has nothing to do with education and everything to do with 1. Liability and 2. A tacit admission of the failure of the public education system.

Not really. High school and college provide fundamentally different types of education which are valuable in different types of circumstance.

No they don’t.

Of course they do. It’s the different between learning information and analysis. College (should) teach analysis. I’m depressed at the trend of 4 year degrees being turned into glorified vocational degrees.

College is being done on line. They are not being taught anything.

Some are but that’s just a back door attempt at checking a box and generally isn’t well regarded.

The death of liberal arts education is a problem. Everyone has this mindset that they need to learn a “thing” in college. It misses the point.

They all are and it is regarded as equal to attending lectures. You’re out of touch.

Nah. Speaking as a college graduate from this millennia and an employer, I know exactly what I’m taking about.

There’s a lot of misconception about college education from a big chunk of the population.

A college graduate from what year?

Recent enough.

I have two within the last 14 months. You’re out of touch.

Hope you didn’t spend too much money. Next time go to a better school.

Excellent schools. I didn’t spend a lot, 2 degrees each.

And another one of a friend who is using his degree to walk 2,500 miles for some reason.

Clearly not. They didn’t teach you anything (by your own admission).

Your problem is two-fold:

  1. I didn’t say any such thing.
  2. I’m not talking about myself. I’m 60 years old, I didn’t graduate college in the last 14 months.

Maybe you want to revisit these two statements:

Doesn’t look like my problem. Seems like you’re (at best) being intentionally vague to cause confusion.
