I’m not sure most people ever advocated college for everyone. We need a broad range of workers - people trained in medicine, engineering, construction, electricians, teachers, entrepreneurs, money managers, car mechanics…
I believe college-educated young people benefit society and I’m a strong believer in the liberal arts education, but far from all people need a college education. We focused too exclusively on it in past decades.
We also need to consider removing so much of the licensing and regulation around many professions. We don’t need gatekeepers for, as examples, beauticians and pet groomers (your state may vary). Nurses should have multiple pathways to licensure including a 4-yr degree path but also, a trade school specifically for RN’s.
Regarding building things he’s correct. Here’s a thought experiment, imagine what America would look like if from it’s founding men had refused to work in any type of trade or hard labor? Do you believe women would have picked up the slack?
Who built the riveters? The rivets? Who taught them how to do it? Decided where the rivets go? Designed the equipment the rivets go on? Moved the rivets from the rivet factory to the rivet machine?
