I wouldn’t normally be here much today, but I’m stuck home and bored, as little lady has Covid. Third time she’s had it and she’s fairly sick, but no fears about getting worse. Like I said it’s her third time. I’m testing negative, even though we took no precautions until her third day when she tested positive. Same thing happened before, and we didn’t take precautions at all, I just didn’t get it. I’ve had it before, but not lately. It’s like I can’t get it any more lol. I shouldn’t say that or I’ll jinx myself and get it!
Later it will get cooked on the grill outside (leaving the whole oven free for other food prep!)
We put it in a disposable aluminum pan. Slather butter all over the outside (and in the cavity and under the loose flaps of skin.) Drizzle olive oil over it. Then lay a pound of bacon strips over the top. Cover all that with aluminum foil. Put it out on the grill for 3 hours on low-low setting. (We recently got a new grill, and had to figure out the proper setting to get it done in 3 hours. So you’ll need to experiment.) Take off the aluminum foil and crank up the heat a little to brown the skin. (And in a lot of places the bacon fuses with the crispy skin, and wow, is that a treat!)
Of course, cleanup is simple. We save all the pan drippings to add to the next day’s soup that we make with the carcass. But the pan itself just goes in the trash. (We let the dogs go nuts licking the remnants first.)
Special hint: I carve the turkey right in that aluminum pan. But put a cookie sheet under it when you bring it in. (That helps transport it too.) Because, invariably I puncture the bottom of the pan while carving. The cookie sheet is a wonderful prevention from making a mess on the kitchen counter.
That sounds fabulous. We were going to son’s house for a gathering but two other guests are immunocompromised so we can’t go with the Covid and thus the closest thing we have in the house to Thanksgiving is egg nog lol.
Tripping in Wyoming. Ate thanksgiving dinner at the Silver Dollar. I didn’t even bother with turkey, had prime rib. We’ll get back tomorrow night to put the turkey in brine, ready for Saturday to smoke.
Flew up to Baltimore to spend Thanksgiving with my Mrs’ family. This annual gathering topped off at around 45 and didn’t include about a dozen more that didn’t make the trip. The wife’s Mom at 91 still cracking the whip and supervising the cooking
The highlight of the day, my birthday, 74 trips around the sun!
I came from a big Italian clan, they’re all back in Pittsburgh. Family is everything, those who have lived it know.
Famiglia, Dio, Patria
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving. We entertained the wife’s parents to a home cooked dinner and the Cowboys/Chiefs game on the big screen. A great day followed by 9 hours of turkey induced deep sleep.
My Thanksgiving inluded all the Holiday trimings but it was a low key with no guests.
When the kids were at home we had 2 of every Holliday.
American Thanksgiving, Christmass and New year and Eastern Orthodox Thanksgiving, ( St. Michael Arkangel, Nov. 21st ), Cristmass and New Years.
Kids were happy having presence twice and we adults were happy keeping up with the old country tradition too.
I enjoyed reading here how you celebrated, thank you for sharing.
Let’s remmember that a lot of Military boys and girls are away from their families.
God Bless them all on this beautiful Holiday.
