Two teenage girls from Germany were detained, arrested, and deported at an airport in Hawaii after immigration officials said it was suspicious they had not booked a hotel room.
Backpackers Charlotte Pohl, 19, and Maria Lepere, 18, arrived in Honolulu from Auckland while undergoing a round-the-world trip. The duo planned to spend five weeks in Hawaii before moving onto California and Costa Rica for the next legs of their journey.
But despite having ESTA travel authorization, immigration officials accused them of attempting to enter the U.S. to work illegally, and they were placed in handcuffs and taken to a nearby detention center they later learned was a deportation facility.
This is not unusual and I would be interested to know how much money they had on them.
I think we all know I am not a fan of the tactics ICE is currently using but I think this is backpackers who on the balance of probability were going to work illegally to fund their travels before moving onto another country.
My brother did that throughout the 90s travelled the world, and worked illegally to fund his travels. Its extremely common and these “backpackers” have an entire community that hooks them up with places to stay, jobs etc. Plenty of online communities if you know where to look.
Upon arrival, they were subjected to full-body scans, strip searches and forced to wear green prison jumpsuits, German outlet Ostee Zeitung reports. They were then placed in a holding facility with serious criminals, including an alleged murderer who had been locked up for 18 years, and were forced to spend the night in a freezing cold double cell.
Nice work ICE! Keeping us safe from backpackers!
Or maybe just getting your jollies because they were two young women.
Once again, we are getting only one side of the story.
I’m certain, if you look hard enough you will find dozens of similar stories every day. Will you be starting a new thread for each one? Is there a point you are trying to make?
First off. i thought it was against the lefties rulebook to determine that someone is a woman.
Next. You know absolutely nothing about this case. Nothing.
The only thing you know is that you need to feed the hatred.
I can understand why @tnt posted this but in this case it sounds like business as usual at an entry point.
Years ago My ex-wife was refused entry to the UK as they did not believe she was a genuine tourist.
However getting back on point, backpackers come under a lot of scrutiny, like I said it’s not unusual for backpackers to work illegally as they travel the globe to fund their travels.
Agree with business as usual at an entry point. I can’t say that I understand what point @TNT is making with these kinds of threads. If one put their mind to it, they could probably find dozens of similar experiences every day. That has been going on for a very long time, under multiple administrations.
Does every single encounter deserve a thread?
I just don’t see the point he is attempting to make.
A lot of the illegal activity ie drug smuggling happens because Americans love taking illegal drugs. This is another good reason to legalize it. Removes a pain point from the border.
