Gen Z Cries for “Time Blindness” Accommodations for a job

Look, I’m a middle class boomer. I grew up in a family that worked hard in the construction trades. Our father had us out on the job sites learning masonry trades when we became 13 or so. It taught me a work ethic that helped me during my working career later in life. One BIG tenet is being on time for work! Or, being 5-10 minutes early in case some circumstance happens. In the end it’s about becoming an asset to your employer.
Asking for an accommodation to be late blaming it on a “medical condition”?
This is ■■■■■■■ insanity.

In my youth…I was habitually late. Then one day an elder gentleman said, “I can tell you why you’re always late. You value your time more than you value the time of others”. Those words were true for me then, just as it applies to everyone that is habitually late. I’m now on time…in fact…gotta go. :sunglasses: :tumbler_glass:

Well, with that attitude, if she ever has a job it will be low paying.

I can’t imagine having a mandatory meeting at 9:00 a.m. and her showing up at 10:45.

I’m sure there are ways for her to learn how to be on time that may take some effort rather than looking to blame everyone else.

I saw the video of the girl? on the right yesterday. I find it interesting.

A few years ago, I had a client come to me for advice.

“I’ve got a tech who’s late EVERY SINGLE DAY! I’ve counseled him, punished him, the only thing left is firing him! What should I do?”

“Fire him.”

“I don’t want to, he’s the best tech I’ve got. When he finally shows up, he works circles around the others!”

“Then shut up about it.”

There are people who show up every day on time for 30 years and never add value.

There are others who add more value in a half a shift than others do all day.

Sometimes our metrics are wrong.

Time blindness. What’s next?

Why is a clock a metric of value added? Is it that important that an employee participate in the first hour of the day? The socializing, the coffee lollygagging, the storytelling, last night’s game BS?

However to address what you said i will say that the perpetually late folks i have ever been around usually contributed little in the way of value.

Late and lazy butts as well.

My experience yours may be different.

Now that is a metric of a different color. They don’t get to do both.

Perhaps we are looking at the two in the wrong priority?

We profit from quality production, but we grade on time. Odd.

That activity happens because it’s tolerated. I never had a problem with coffee and lunch breaks. In summer months it was mandatory for hydration breaks. But a supervisor that allows employees to lollygag around bull ■■■■■■■■ when there’s work to be done?
That person needs help or replaced.

My question is if she has time blindness. Does she ever work late because she loses track of time? Or is she promptly out the door everyday?

There’s always work to be done. When and why do you tolerate “coffee breaks”?

How about smoke breaks? I’ve timed them-7 minutes per.

What’s the difference between 4 coffee breaks and coming in an hour later?

The tech in my story habitually stayed until the task was complete.

Even if time blindness is “real” there are simple solutions, program an alarm reminder on your phone to get to work to fire off every 10 mins, timed so that those reminders are given well in advance of your start time.

You ever work in construction? A 10 o’clock coffee break is almost a norm.
“Smoke breaks”? Made me laugh. Smoking in the workplace died off years ago with second hand smoke lawsuits. But to be fair accommodations have been made for nicotine addicts looking to destroy their health. I had an experience at a project site where smokers were given an area to ingest carcinogens into their lungs. It was at the furthest corner of a parking lot approx. 200 yards away. They could only go during their 1/2 hr. lunch period and told they are not being paid to smoke tobacco.
All about choices.

I agree with one caveat. They still have to put in the hours they are scheduled. If you are an hour late, you work an hour past your normal quitting time.

Yes, but whose? The most efficient organizations in business are only “working” about 60% of the allotted time. And most of the time that is the organization’s inefficiency.

Yet we’ll lose our minds over clocking in 6 minutes late.
