Fewer and fewer Americans want anything to do with serving in the military

“Joining” and “staying long enough to learn to be useful” are two different things.

Where do you get that crap?

On this statement we are in complete agreement.

Okay. So then answer the question in your own words. Like what “other things”?

I think being a doctor is an example of someone who earns good money, but engages in a challenging, demanding job that serves teh community and america well.

I think a wall street trader who makes great money, and supports a non-profit and gives of his time is an example of someone who both makes money, and is giving to the community and country.

I think a plumber who runs a successful business, and is careful to hire veterans, or recently incarcerated people…again…successful, and generous to community and country.

There are literally thousands of examples.

Blackwater was founded in 1996. Now it is part of a company with over 17,000 employees. Quite a record of growth!

Governments like the idea of using contractors for overseas military actions, coups, etc. Contractors minimize potential political problems and annoying oversight by elected officials.

Come out from under the couch.

You are very judgemental about how others should lead their lives.

I agree it may be there for all at some level but does not take away thar for some (maybe many now) there are other primary consideration’s fuelling their decision.

Yes, thousands of examples that relate to earning more money for personal gain, not serving the country. That’s not to say that people are bad for doing that, and you are right that the services they provide are good for the country, but it is not the same as making the personal sacrifices required to perform military service.

Plenty of people join the military for personal gain, so I’m not really buying the ‘if you’re most patriotic only if you serve’.

Of course you’re not. :smirk:

Looking out, way ahead, from the time you join the workforce until the time you’ll retire…one of the better career paths I’ve seen is joining the military. Once you’ve got 20 years in, you can retire with a nice pension plus healthcare for the balance of your life. Then…what ever it was that was the expertise you learned while in the military, the military will often hire you back again, paying even more…to teach and to put into practice…that skill. Those retirees then earn well over 6 digit incomes and our country will always need it’s military so you have job security.

A lifetime parasite on the productive people in society.

In my neck of the woods, there are several military bases and I’ve had the pleasure of living with these retirees. IMO…they’re fine people, who love their country and that was their motivation. It was my observations of them, that was the basis for my post. We can see how things may be heading but it wasn’t always that way. I love my country and so do you. IF…we were in the military, would we be parasites? I’d conclude that we’d give more than we get.

It looks like desperation is setting in.

Too little, too late?
