Felony and hate crime to deface an American flag?

Yep i should have been more specific. I meant i am against automatic enhancements and it should be ona a case by case basis. But yes that is also wrought with issues

I don’t feel that sorry for the gentleman in Iowa. Twice-convicted felon and a habitual offender before and he’s eligible for parole in three years.

Those who champion tough on crime policies and are against Soros DAs might consider his sentence a bit lenient.

sure. nobody ever got hurt by a thought. EVER,

absolutely. every citizen. not just politicians.

Remember how some libs wanted those teenagers heads for leaving skid marks on painted LGBQ or whatever flag in Spokane Wa?

That crosses the line from thought to action, which is illegal.

you can think anything you want to about Pride. its america. land of free thought.

once it becomes action. it becomes a police matter.

Felony and hate crime to deface an American flag?

So let’s say I modify the flag in some way would that still be a crime?

Say for example instead of one with 50 stars there were only 49. Then deface it, it wouldn’t be a real US Flag.

Crime or no?

Here’s what took place during Netanyahu’s speech. Do you think any of these people will serve time? The OP is about someone getting 15 years for what he did to a gay pride flag. In this instance, they take down the American flag and burn it, then fly the Palestinian flag at our nation’s capital.

Comparison:
750 people were arrested and 467 people went to jail for the Jan 6 protests.
Apparently, some of them did nothing more than walk around outside the capitol or inside while Capitol police walked them and, chatted with them, helped check doors etc…

Part of me wants to see the same happen to the pro-terrorism protesters who yesterday stole the flag, set it on fire, fought with police etc. etc…
Equal justice under law, right?

.
But the fact is, stealing an American flag, setting it on fire, refusal to disperse etc. are all minor crimes and should be treated as such. The people who should go to jail are the government officials who abused their offices and engaged in selective justice by pursuing one set of protesters more than the others.

  • Steal a flag and set it on fire? No big deal. (Wrist slap._
  • Use the power of government to oppress people, jail your political opponents etc etc? You have no place in free society. You are the enemy. You are the criminal.

justice for destroying an American flag should involve having the ones who destroy it, replace it through their own seamstressing…

A very large US flag costs about $600.

Cooler heads prevailing:

The punishment should be no different than if a protester stole someone’s $600 cell phone and smashed it to bits to make a political statement.

The real criminals are the government officials who treat one set of protesters one way and a second set another.

Okay. Spill the beans. Why are you using this pattern of speech?

Says who?

No, the real criminals are the people who set the flag on fire.

In the old south:
a black man who jaywalks, or shoplifts, or steals hubcaps
got a different sentence than a white man who did the same.

In the McCarthy Era
Joe McCarthy used the power of government to pursue and punish people based on their political beliefs

In today’s America
If you stand in a crowd cheering at a pro-Trump rally while others commit crimes you get prosecuted, but not if you do the same at a pro-Hamas rally.

in all of these cases, the government employee committed a very serious crime and that is where our attention, and our ire, should be focused.

PS
I like to think that in the McCarthy era I would have re-registered as a Democrat and worked to against Joe McCarthy. (and I don;t even like communists.)

I got my start in grown-up politics working for Amnesty International. I did extensive work on behalf of Lee Tae Bok, a S Korean labor organizer (and probably communist) who had been arrested tortured and jailed for his non-violent political activities. (and I don’t even like communists.)

This had nothing to do with whether I agree with a person’s underlying political beliefs. Using the power of government to oppress someone based on his political beliefs is wrong and I will defend the victim and oppose the government official even if I disagree with his underlying beliefs. Would you?

Don’t piss off the privileged virtuous classes, or else.

What?

Or deface with a blue stripe.

I am sorry but I have to be blant.
This is not Freedom and Democracy.
The radical left have us by the gonads.
The longer we sit and only complain the worse the abuse will become.
To have a Palestine flag flown instead of the USA in the middle of the country is NOT free speach it is cowardly letting the mob push us around.
If you shorten the rogue elements by a foot when it first aserts it self the message becomes clear and it deters the future tries.
Same goes for rogue judges, weaponized heads of the alphabet institutions etc.
BUT…that requires courage. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:
