Electric Cars are coming- no need to drill in Alaska

It goes back to how the D3 markets trucks in general.

They only focus on towing and hauling. It’s all about the numbers. Higher numbers means better to them.

They don’t know how to market these EV trucks.

I can accept the fact that ford is experimenting and that their “experiments” have to include putting an actual not-yet-ready vehicle on the market.

(That’s how Nissan stumbled upon the 300z!)

But I sincerely hope that policymakers at Ford and in DC and Davos see the experiments and realize the simple fact: “These experiments prove that the technology isn’t ‘there’ yet and we should not force these things down the market’s throat.”

But we all know the failed experiments will be treated as “Ford is already doing it let’s force more and force it faster. Whatever make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside.”

They electrified the wrong vehicle.

The Maverick is literally the perfect truck to fully electrify. People who like compact trucks aren’t concerned about towing and hauling capacity. “Can it tow a Lawnmower or a four wheeler? Yes? Good enough.”

Toyota is finally introducing a hybrid powertrain to the Tacoma despite their hybrid system having been available for nearly 30 years at this point. Because they knew their customers who buy Tacomas and knew they could only introduce hybridization into the Tacoma once it was a truly perfected. They’ve done that so now they are introducing it as an option in the new Tacoma line up.

Me? I like the new 2.4L turbo powertrain with the six speed manual which shockingly is still around. And even crazier is that they expanded its availability. You no longer have to get 4WD to get a manual. You can option it with the 2WD models on the new generation.

Meaning that base SR model has finally become viable in the Tacoma. A 240 horse engine paired to a manual in extended cab form.

Heck, I once carried 1584 pounds in my 1974 Datsun pick-up truck. The bed was sitting on the axel, but it managed the load. :wink:

Hybrids are actually very reasonable provided electric is the back up rather than trying to drive on electric till the batteries give out and then use gas, which is sadly how many people seem to use them till it is now a point in the ads.

I posted that gif simply because you mentioned smug and it reminded me of that South Park episode lol. Smug Alert is on my top ten SP episodes.

Thing is I actually like BEVs. Ever since I test drove a demo car Nissan Leaf for a weekend when I worked at a Nissan dealership. I think they’re pretty neat and they fit certain lifestyles perfectly. When someone releases a BEV compact truck I’ll probably get one.

My issue is that all these companies and a lot of politicians are lying about what they can do and what they are good for. Especially the full size electric trucks. The marketing is all kinds of stupid on full size BEV trucks.

The thing about so much of satire is … someone is now there and also 10 miles down the road.

It’s like Cleese catching flak because he doesn’t want to take out the wants to be a woman bit in Life of Brian.

As I understand the Dodge pickup is kinda like a hybrid. Just opposite of priority. Right know there goal is 450 miles on charge and then an option would be a small gas charger to get a couple of hundred more. Now that might be just marketing hype but if true, I would be interested. They claim they are not rushing to market because they want to get it right. If they do the others will fail.

Any self respecting pickup can tow a diesel generator to make money charging stranded EVs with. But to go for the gusto maybe producer gas could be used … they can be set up to reduce road kill.

Instead of putting a tiger in your tank put a skunk in their battery!

How many stranded EVs have you ever seen? I have never been close to stranded.

How many cars do you think you may have ever passed that just ran out of gas? It happens.

And as there are many more gas cars just to be driven by folks like I’ve been in the past, fellow reserve tank wonders, than there are EVs you gotta figure they’re out there in small but growing numbers.

I’m waiting for the first mass evacuation from Houston with an incoming Cat 4 bearing down on the Gulf Coast. The EV loaded with the family, the pets and important items trying to make it out of the storm path should be an interesting exercise.

The kids in the back seat will be charging their devices so they don’t run down. Bank on it.

What will be sad is the front seat parent charging theirs so they can keep recieving weather reports.

If you have a small gas generator in it what does it matter?

Gas generators usually are far from 100% duty cycle. For that you need something like a Lister stationary engine or some gas hit and miss engine running a generator.

Even hybrids run out of gas in an all-out evacuation from Houston. All the roads are jammed, with the fuel stations running out due to everyone trying to get additional fuel. Also it’s 60 miles from the South side of Houston to the North Slde Another 180 miles to the outskirts of Dallas. 210 miles from the West side of Houston to San Antonio. About 180 miles from the Northwest side to Austin. The first hour of a true EV’s range is spent just getting across Houston. And the true EV will need a trailer to haul the generator and fuel for it. And the near none existence of charging stations between Houston and these evacuation destinations will make it interesting.

So what is your point? This discussion started about extended range pickup and you are going on about how no vehicle is good for a cat 4 hurricane. Remember we just had a Hurricane in FL. We know what it is like also. No one has claimed it is the best vehicle for every situation and location.
