Better be careful with how they ship.

“A Biden-led administration’s rapid push towards an all-electric future would rob U.S. auto workers of the advantage of experience and U.S. auto plants of the advantage of previously built manufacturing capacity,” Mansour wrote in October 2020

That article is qouting another Breitbart article three years out of date. There are already robust provisions in the IRA to direct money towards domestic EV supply chains and specifically away from China.

The IRA includes three sets of requirements related to vehicle components and assembly for EV models to qualify for tax credits, with the intention of bolstering domestic production.

Assembly in North America:
As part of the IRA, final assembly of electric vehicle models must occur in North America to be eligible, effective immediately after the enactment of the legislation.

Critical minerals and battery components:
To qualify for the full $7,500 credit, vehicles must meet two sets of standards related to their vehicle components. If a vehicle only meets one of these two requirements, it qualifies for a $3,750 tax credit.

50% of the value of battery components must be produced or manufactured in North America in fiscal year 2023, with the minimum percentage increasing annually.

40% of the value of critical minerals used for the vehicle must be extracted, processed, and/or recycled domestically or in a country the U.S. has a free trade agreement with, with the minimum percentage increasing annually. EV manufacturing requires a range of minerals, including cobalt, copper, nickel, graphite, and lithium

Entities of concern: Starting in 2024, vehicles with any battery components manufactured or assembled in an “entity of concern” are not eligible for the tax credit. Beginning in 2025, vehicles with critical minerals extracted, processed, or recycled by entities of concern will not qualify. Nations of concern include China and Russia.

Looking at it further, it’s interesting to see how everything in that 2020 headline ended up being wrong

Biden’s Energy Policies Could Kill 160,000 Michigan Jobs, Decimate Auto Manufacturing

In February 2023, Ford announced a $3.5 billion investment to build BlueOval Battery Park Michigan, a lithium iron phosphate battery plant in Marshall, continuing the automaker’s commitment to transitioning to EV production in the state. CAP cites the IRA as an incentive for the transformative investment set to benefit the surrounding Marshall community, its businesses and residents. At the time of the announcement, Ford’s CEO Jim Farley said in reference to the Marshall plant, “this is the reason the IRA was passed.”

In January 2023, General Motors’ (GM) $7 billion investment in Michigan was recognized in the Electric Vehicles (EV) category of Business Facilities’ 2022 Impact Awards, announced as part of the publication’s annual Deal of the Year awards. The news came days after Michigan was recognized by CNBC as one of the top three states set to “dominate” U.S. battery manufacturing by 2030.

Since the start of the Biden Administration, we have tracked more than $100 billion in new battery supply chain investments, including $17 billion in Michigan. These new investments will produce over 168 GWh of battery cell capacity and create over 12,000 new jobs in the state.

Those robust provisions will do nothing if people can’t or won’t by the product.

More ideological fever dreams.

They can stow those electric cars where the sun don’t shine for my part of them.

I will never buy one.

Michigan only lost 82000 jobs.

Yippee.

I wouldn’t say nobody but a lot will not.

Im all for waiting until the technology is ready before we ruin/crash our fossil fuel based economy prematurely.

Wishing and hoping EV will be the next best thing isn’t cutting it.

We will need both.

If the price of plug in hybrids could be brought down to commonly affordable, there would be a huge reduction in the use of fossil fuels for transportation. If the government had to be involved, this is where the efforts should have been concentrated. Instead, our resources are being wasted on a 100% EV pipe dream that customers aren’t buying, other than as a second car for well off suburbanites.
