The National Parks Service unceremoniously removed their infamous sign at the Visitors Center at Glacier National Park this week that warned tourists the glaciers will be ‘Gone by 2020’; citing several season of “heavy snow.”
“Glacier retreat in Glacier National Park speeds up and slows down with fluctuations in the local climate,” the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), which monitors Glacier National Park, told The Daily Caller News Foundation.
“Those signs were based on the observation prior to 2010 that glaciers were shrinking more quickly than a computer model predicted they would,” USGS told the DC. “Subsequently, larger than average snowfall over several winters slowed down that retreat rate and the 2020 date used in the NPS display does not apply anymore.”
“The overall picture remains the same, however, and that picture is that the glaciers all continue to retreat,” USGS said.
The Department’s decision comes weeks after Denver, Colorado saw the biggest late-spring snowfall in more than 44 years.
“As of 8 a.m. on Tuesday, Denver had officially received 3.4 inches of snow. That’s the most snow measured this late in the season since May 29, 1975 when 5.6 inches hit the city,” reports CBS Denver.
“In addition to the snow, Denver tied the record low temperature for May 21 when the official thermometer for the city dropped to 31 degrees Tuesday morning. It was previously 31 degrees on this date in 2001 when 1 inch of snow fell,” adds the website.

The sudden deep freeze is similar to another major snowstorm that slammed the Midwest in April.
“Even though spring may have sprung across much of the country, a major late-season winter storm is threatening to bring blizzard conditions to the Central U.S.,” reports Fox News.
“A blizzard my friends, in April, it’s happening across portions of South Dakota up towards Nebraska and then into Wisconsin,” said Fox News Senior Meteorologist. “We could see over a foot of snow and windy conditions and the potential for flooding ahead of this, some ice as well.”
The storm came on the heels of massive flooding across parts of Nebraska and beyond and could contribute to ongoing reconstruction efforts in the region.
