I am not sure there is a problem with private management of prisons.
I AM sure that
it has absolutely zero to do with the fact that we keep releasing folks and rearresting them after 5, 6 7, 8 arrests etc.
and has zero to do with the fact that half of all prisoners in the survey were less than 24 months arrest to free-as-a-bird.
Those ar3 problems. They should be addressed and private prison management has zero top do with them.
In fact I suspect it was raised wiht the intent to change/derail the topic.
“South Africa has one of the highest recidivism rates in the world, with estimates ranging from 86% to 94% of convicted criminals reoffending after being released from prison.”
It’s hard to have any empathy for addicts who commit crimes and go to prison. People make choices. Some people make really bad choices. Some people make really bad choices that ruin other peoples lives.
The person that took my son’s life is in prison.I don’t believe he should ever get out. But he will one day. Justice would have been his life.
Me, my husband, my children, will suffer every single day for the rest of our lives for the choices that person made.
This person knew what he was doing was wrong. This person knew that he was making a choice to do something that could harm someone. Why shouldn’t he pay for rest of his life? I do.
I am deeply sorrowed by what happened to your family.
If it is any consolation, the study we are discussing here did not show any indication that people who commit homicide are getting off easy.
What it shows is
About half the prison population is free-as-a-bird within two years of their arrest. (Seems like our sentences should be harsher.)
Over 80% of the prison population are career criminals who have been arrested 4 or more times. (seems like our sentences should be harsher)
