Commerce: Feb Retail sales flat. Dept Stores, Restaurants & Gas Stations down. Online Shopping and Grocery Stores up

The Feb “Advance Monthly Retail Sales” report was released this morning.

Here is a summary
image

https://www.census.gov/retail/sales.html

Dept Stores down 1.7%
Food Service & Drinking down 1.5%
Gas Stations down 1%

Online shopping up 2.4%

These numbers are monthly (roughly 1/12th the annual number)
and are not inflation adjusted.

I think my wife is singlehandley responsible for the 2.4% increase in online shopping.

Lol exactly - i am sure we have our own dedicated Amazon driver. And dont get me started on the crap she orders from TEMU.

But I take the path of least resistance and smile through gritted teeth as I carry in the packages. Look dear more crap you ordered!!!

I can beat that… The wife and an 18 year old daughter. I’m about ready to give the amazon driver his own key.

They both have jobs, but I think it all goes to on-line shopping. And I can’t name one thing the better half bought that we actually needed. But I learned long ago that discression is the better part of valor in such matters.

I swear spent less when they had to physically watch the dollars leave their hand.

When they had to actually drive to the stores, walk all over and look at things, then carry what they had bought around with them it was more restrained. Now it is setting on the couch, with the lap top, or smart phone, scrolling through web searches, while sipping a Coke Zero, then click a button and tell me to watch for their delivery.

meh… the wife and I do most of our shopping online. even the grocery shopping. The only thing we go to the grocery store for now is to buy Seafood and steaks. Both walmart and amazon delver and getting prime and walmart free delivery comes with paramount+ showtime and prime video. don’t have cable anymore, just those and hulu and all the free crap that tv gets. almost forgot netflix

I don’t miss shopping one bit

Brick-and-mortar retail
not including cars, gasoline or restaurants, & bars.
(IOW Just plain-old everyday shopping.)

It ain’t doing so hot.

BestBuy in particular.
Their losses aren’t very big, but they are pretty consistent.

I love how this thread has gone :grinning:.

She’s buying more online (like everyone else),
has she at least stopped ordering from restaurants, (like everyone else)?

I have never seen a discussion between men, about their women’s purchasing habits, that didn’t lead to shared adult refreshments and shared common experiences.

What stage?

You might think that’s a business cycle but it’s actually lack of demand for teeth. I bet we could solve it if Treasury sent everyone $100 to buy teeth.

I believe you are joking,
but just in case:

  • The dates match up.
  • The begin and end points match up
  • The rises and falls match up

Oh I was joking…. I need better (more obvious) jokes!
