The cost of attendance at some colleges is now nearing six figures a year, after factoring in tuition, fees, room and board, books, transportation and other expenses.
Among the schools appearing on The Princeton Review’s “The Best 389 Colleges” list, eight institutions — including New York University, Tufts, Brown, Yale and Washington University in St. Louis — have a sticker price of more than $90,000 for the 2024-25 academic year, according to data provided to CNBC.
According to MS copilot
A public college today (including room board tuition etc.)
costs about 35.7% of the median income and a Private college costs 76.3% of the median income.
These percentages are EACH roughly 3x higher than they were in the 1980s.
CoPilot is not super reliable, but it is a reasonable starting point.
To be fair, I doubt back in 1980 you could have taken a course on the impact of white privilege on feminist lesbians from a vegan point of view…so clearly the topics of “education” have expanded.
Like with cars, sticker price has nothing to do with actual price paid.
Like JD discovered, private colleges have ample $$$ for financial aid. For poor students it will be free. Only the wealthy will pay anywhere close to “sticker”.
You can go to the financial aid section of any private college and see all the financial aid they have available and how little your student will pay.
