Charleston, S.C., Elects First Republican Mayor Since the 1870s

An interesting victory and notable in that the Republican in this race is quite the moderate and pragmatic individual. The race turned on local issues rather than national issues, which likely was key in the Republican winning.

From a recent debate which centered around flooding and sea rise issues.

I posted a recent OP on Charleston’s banning of new slab on grade construction in low lying areas. It is exactly this sort of issue on which this election turned.

I believe the incoming Mayor supports the ban on slab, as do I, in favor of elevated crawl space construction.

I doubt it. While Walterboro is not all that far from Charleston, I seriously doubt it played any role in the elect
