Dozens of Central American immigrants were detained by American agents Monday after rushing the US-Mexico border; escalating the high-stakes showdown between the ‘migrant caravan’ and US authorities.

Department of Homeland Security officials confirmed the incident Monday, saying at least 50 individuals were in custody inside the United States after storming the border at San Ysidro, California.

“In Mexico, Tijuana’s municipal government also announced it arrested more than three-dozen migrants for disturbing the peace and other charges related to the crossing attempt. Thousands of migrants have been gathering there after crossing through Mexico in a series of caravans that originated from Central America – and presumably are amongst those who were arrested on both sides of the border,” writes Fox News.

"We will seek to prosecute to the fullest extent of the law anyone who destroys federal property, endangers our frontline operators, or violates our nation’s sovereignty,” said DHS Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.
