Yeah, I didn’t expect that to happen based on some of the stuff his defense team has been throwing out there lately. The families aren’t happy about it, and I get it. They are seeing it from the emotional side of their children are gone, this guy should pay for that and be gone also. Death penalty comes with a lot of baggage. appeals and nuances so maybe they should take the win and try to heal.
Sounds good to me. Nice and easy. Caged for life. Anything can happen in prison. Jeffrey Dahmer avoided the DP too. A few years later he was in the morgue.
I am opposed to the death penalty but with that said I understand why family members would want the death penalty.
I have never been convinced that the death penalty provides closure or comfort and from what I have read the death penalty does not universally give family members the closure they seek.
Now this is nearly 10 years old but a 2017 study from the Journal of Criminology Studies found that about 40% of families feel some relief after an execution, 30% had no relief at all, and 30% had mixed feelings about closure.
Coward to the very end.
Probably was afraid of the possible firing squad.
And I don’t believe for a second that ‘found God’ or ‘has an urge to confess’ was the motive for the agreement.
And some of the families will feel they didn’t get justice…I think the confession IS justice. At least the most justice one can get under the circumstances.
They need to consider that the testimony of two girls, and the trauma because of it should they testify as witnesses, won’t be needed now.
THAT is a sacrifice they, (families of the victims who feel shortened on the Justice 'cos there won’t be a trial), need to make.
And yes, if it had gone to trial, the family would have had to relive the murders over and over in the media. And you can bet it would have been a media circus.
I think one of the things that bothers the family is that he will not have to say why he did it. Under the deal he does not have to explaine his motive. They are still left in limbo.
I don’t think some of them are thinking clearly as emotion is so high in this situation. They also don’t realize this saves them from years, probably decades, of never ending appeals from him if founf guilty at trial because of the death sentence angle. It’s just sad all around. So many emotions here in the community right now.
I would have liked for the prosecution to have had a chance to present their case and the evidence against mr. Kohberger; as well as to hear him testify and present a motive.
