“Trust the science”
is possibly the most anti-scientific statement ever.
“Question the science” is the only way science has ever been done.

“Holy carp, Batman”
Carp are fun to catch (they fight like crazy on the line) but they are hard to clean (very bony fish)
I see food for many mammals there.
From MS Copilot:
Geosmin is a naturally occurring compound produced by certain bacteria and algae, and it’s known for its earthy or musty smell. When fish like carp, tilapia, catfish, and other “dirty water” fish are raised in environments where geosmin-producing organisms are present, they can absorb these compounds through their gills and skin. This can lead to an off-flavor in the fish, often described as an earthy or muddy taste, which is considered undesirable by consumers.
Fish farmers often use a process called depuration to reduce these off-flavors before harvesting the fish. This involves placing the fish in clean water for a period of time to allow them to excrete the geosmin and other off-flavor compounds.
Does this help clarify the impact of geosmin on the flavor of these fish?
I eat the catfish I catch in the lake (if they are big enough), but not the ones I catch in the river (lots of chemical plants along the Ohio)
still have to remove the mud strip… I usually just throw them back…
Cats have a strong taste anyway, if I want a bland fish, I’ll buy cod
We won two world wars and have an enormous nuclear arsenal. Yet we will be defeated by the Asian Carp and Kudzu.
So long as you know the bad taste is from geosmin
which is basicallyalgae etc and not caused by chemical pollution)
I’ll feel a sense of accomplishment today!
As you grandpa about this.
(It’s called Doonesbury.)
