Bloomberg: 1-in-5 recent male college grads have completely left the workforce

From the article:

The share of male college graduates participating in the workforce has declined in the past year, with 1 in 5 under the age of 25 neither employed nor actively looking for work, according to the latest 12-month average in a Bloomberg News analysis of government data. . . .

Recent college graduates are confronting a job market that’s shifting into a lower gear after a three-year run of historically strong hiring. The unemployment rate ticked up for a fourth month in July, while the ratio of openings to job seekers was at 1.2 in June—down from a peak of 2-to-1 in 2022. . . .

Male-dominated industries such as technology and finance have been at the forefront of the recent slowdown, eliminating positions and halting expansion plans as they cope with overhiring, higher borrowing costs and an uncertain economic outlook. . . .

They are probably just bummed out about their huge student debt. Forgive that and they will all become productive members of society. :smirk:

I guess they don’t have their own apartments.

Well the Harris/Biden economy has created its fair share of low wage part time dead end jobs, but they will have to compete with millions of phony asylum seekers for them.

The story brings to mind

  • The opening scenes from The Graduate, and
  • The opening scenes from Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke
    smoke

each of which reveals a protagonist who is a recent college graduate neither employed nor seeking employment.

Chong was about 40 and his dad was threatening to send him to military school.

This isn’t the first time nor will it be the last that hiring “shifts into a lower gear after a three year run of historically strong hiring”.

Yeah,
Is there a word for that low thingy that follows a boom?
Cause I’m predicting one might happen,
heck, it might already be underway.

Question is, “Is it good policy to pretend it is not happening?”

Maybe that “Trade School” route might have been the better choice?

They must not have bills.

No, there is a cover charge for being alive. They just aren’t the one paying it.

Too chicken ■■■■ to put on a uniform and defend the country and system that made it possible to get that degree in “Gender Studies” and run up tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt.
They could have enlisted after HS did a 3-4 year contract and gotten their education paid for.

Can’t wear a man bun and those silly oversized earring hole expanders in uniform.
