Almost to the day of the 50th anniversary of the traumatic Yom Kippur war, when Israel was caught by surprise on two fronts, its military establishment was once again taken completely off guard by a Hamas-coordinated land, sea and air attack.
A handful of terrorists dressed up in shiny new uniforms for the cameras. That hardly qualifies as a reconstitution of Hamas as an effective fighting force.
Yet the Israeli military’s advancements were constantly undermined by Hamas’ ability to quickly replace its leadership and rebuild its forces by making use of the nature of the prolonged war.
Sinwar’s younger brother, Mohammed, is currently in charge of the group and has put his focus on rebuilding Hamas through the promise of food and revenge to a new generation of fighters convinced that Israel is to blame for the 15-months of devastation in Gaza.
“We are in a situation where the pace at which Hamas is rebuilding itself is higher than the pace that the IDF is eradicating them,” Amir Avivi, a retired Israeli brigadier general, told the Wall Street Journal earlier this month.
Arab officials told the outlet that Hamas may have recruited thousands of new operatives in recent months, by using the humanitarian crisis in Gaza to its advantage.
Well, my solution is a two-mile wide meteorite striking about on the Syrian/Iraqi/Jordanian border creating a hole that causes the Persian Gulf and the Mediterranean Sea to merge.
Everyone is NOT assuming that this time it will be different. In fact, no knowledgeable person is saying that. But some people are hoping this time there will be a substantial pause (wherever that is) in major hostilities. As long as there are armed groups calling for the complete destruction of the country of Israel and as long as Israel exists, this conflict will continue.
What I would like to know is how they have remained a fighting force (effective or not) for 16 months. One would have thought that their munitions would have been exhausted months ago.
