Gonna be a long 4 years for Norman.
Sammy is waiting in the wings to spell Norman should he become overwhelmed.
I actually think something like “American Gulf” or “Gulf of America” makes sense. The Gulf is surrounded by the North American continent.

The president-elect subsequently decried the Mexican government for allowing migrants to “pour” into the United States, saying Mexico “can stop them and we’re going to put very serious tariffs on Mexico and Canada because Canada, they come through Canada, too.”
Both countries to the north and south of the USA have not been good neighbors and I personally feel they need to pay a price for their behavior allowing human and drug trafficking into our country, it’s disgusting and it’s almost an act of war, IMO. So, I hope Trump sanctions the hell out of them and brings them to heel . Let’s show them who’s the boss is in our hemisphere!

Mexico is also part of the North American continent.

Not a hill to die on, if you ask me.
Really, it’s up to the mapmakers what name they put in the center of that body of water.
Gulf of America WOULD be fitting, given that both the United States and Mexico are in America. But geez, the muscle memory is going to keep me calling it Gulf of Mexico for the rest of my life.
Kind of like DCA has always been and will always be National Airport to me.

Who’s buying and using all those people and drugs?
Party of personal responsibility - smh.

More than that.
My understanding is that any country can name the body of water whatever they choose. The US could call it the Gulf of America and rework all of their maps to reflect the new name. Meanwhile, the rest of the world could continue to refer to it as the Gulf of Mexico.
I don’t see that ever happening, but I thought the article was interesting and worthy of discussion.
There are some international implications, and it can get complicated in terms of what it’s called on e-charts which are used worldwide. I recall many years back there was a kerfuffle at the International Maritime Organization over what to call the Falklands. Argentina wanted Islas Malvinas, and UK wanted Falkland Islands to appear in international instruments, charts, etc. Ultimately they went with Islas Falklands.

You beat me to it . I have no love for drug traffickers but Americans have an insatiable appetite for illegal drugs.
There are millions of Americans who use drugs recreationally and these drugs are originating from the cartels.
Drug use transcends politics and I am sure there are plenty of elected reps on both sides who like to indulge.
Well the UK did go to war over the Falkland Islands so no surprise thats what we wanted to call it .
But yes that disagreement rumbles on.
Yep! So is Canada. What is your point?

By that “logic” we should change the name of the Gulf of Maine, the Gulf of California, the Gulf of Alaska, etc., all to Gulf of America.

Oryx:
the Gulf of Maine
Mostly New England, so, the New England Gulf
Oryx:
Gulf of California
THAT should be the Gulf of Mexico.
Oryx:
Gulf of Alaska
Pretty much only Alaska around it, so leave it as is.

Huh?
Those gulfs are also “surrounded by the North American continent.”
They all can’t have the same name, if that is what you are proposing.

I’m not proposing that or anything else, I’m pointing out that the idea that the Gulf of Mexico should be called the Gulf of America because it’s “surrounded by the North American continent” is silly. It’s just one of many North American gulfs.
