As part of a pushback against the lingering remnants of colonialism, Barbados will remove Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State by November 2021 and become a republic, with the Office of Governor General likely being converted to the Office of President. However, Barbados will remain a member of the British Commonwealth.
Barbados is the first nation to remove Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State since Mauritius did so in 1992.
A number of other nations may follow suit in the near future, particularly Jamaica.
