I just saw this on the news…it’s from Lincoln’s 1863 Thanksgiving Proclamation…

“ On October 3, 1863, President Lincoln issued a proclamation designating “the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving.” Lincoln’s announcement marked the culmination of a multi-decade campaign by Sarah Josepha Hale to make Thanksgiving into a national holiday. Although Lincoln wrote the vast majority of his state papers, the Thanksgiving Proclamation was in fact drafted by Seward.”.

“It has seemed to me fit and proper that they should be solemnly, reverently and gratefully acknowledged as with one heart and one voice by the whole American People. I do therefore invite my fellow citizens in every part of the United States, and also those who are at sea and those who are sojourning in foreign lands, to set apart and observe the last Thursday of November next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens. Are Black Friday sales still the huge event they once were? When I first moved to the states it seemed every Black Friday was full of stories about people queuing up for days to snag the “best deals” or reports of crowds surging through walmarts. Today not so much.

Though it is great to see more and more retailers close for the entirety of Thanksgiving day allowing more people to be off work to celebrate the holiday.
