500 MWh standalone battery storage facility enters operation in Texas

Each phase of the combined storage project is greater than 250 MWh, and the combined facilities have two-hour discharge, putting the system at well over 500 MWh

The Madero and Ignacio facilities’ multi-hour continuous dispatch capability provides the longest duration of any energy storage assets operating in ERCOT, and as a combined site the project is the world’s largest (by MWh) fully-merchant and market-facing energy storage facility built to-date, the supplier said.

The facilities will also deliver ancillary services required for grid stability, such as frequency response and regulation in the ERCOT grid.

The Texas project is the first U.S. storage project to make use of the Investment Tax Credit (ITC) for standalone utility-scale energy storage systems, which was introduced in the Inflation Reduction Act of 2022.

Energy storage is making huge strides. Every new battery firms up the reliability of alternative generating capacity.

I remember when 10MW was a big deal. I think that was around the same time when a 20GB hard disc drive would be all one could ever need for storage.

I think he’s changed his strategy.

Instead of putting all this info in one thread, he’s going to spam the board with new threads each and every time a new ‘green power’ station is erected in the US.

This one is definitely a full-on fanboy/lobbyist for solar and wind. Probably monetarily invested in this.

Personally, I think solar, wind, hydro, etc., are neat, on an off-grid home level that actually benefits real people. I recently turned my spare minivan into a solar powered camper. Gonna have an awesome set of adventures this summer.

This Green Energy Cult is a cancer on humanity though. They’re gonna destroy the ■■■■ out of this planet by “saving” it, no matter how many african children have to die mining their cobalt.

Good thing I have a 1,000 watt backup generator in my garage.

They might destroy the planet, but at least I know my frozen lamb is safe.

This is the world’s largest energy storage facility built to-date, and the first of many to make use of job creating, domestic energy security incentives within the Inflation Reduction Act.

Which is another way of saying it didn’t make economic sense absent wads of government cash.

Energy security doesn’t have to be a private endeavor. The government should incentivize it.

That battery backup is probably good for a half hour at most and a traditional fossil fuel back up is still necessary. Total waste of money

It’s competing with gas peakers that also need traditional backup because their enormous operating cost is only profitable at the highest energy prices.

Great investment. Especially considering the volatility of gas prices.

So they shouldn’t shut down pipelines that would provide maximum energy security. Good to know.

Artificial volatility of gas prices. Policy affected volatility. I would have accepted either of those.

Well here’s a peaker plant that sidesteps all that. Energy security increased.

At the very least we know Texans will get all the benefits of this battery plant.

If it was a great investment, it wouldn’t require tax incentives.

And by benefit you mean a half hour of power before the peaker gas plant has to come on line.

At peaker prices, that’s a huge benefit.

Hmmm…then why were so many conservatives here getting on AOC’s case for resisting Amazon Headquarters 2?

Which was nothing but a taxpayer-funded boondoggle so Amazon could get its hands on very important (to it) infrastructure investment plan information?

Information its competitors can’t get, even with right to know requests.

I remember all the complaints about how she was “killing jobs”.

Fact…people don’t mind tax incentives to businesses if it’s a business sector they like.

Fact…governments have been giving out tax and other incentives to businesses since forever. There is very rarely any “government free” business investment anymore.

What is funny is this is the bad guy’s proposed “power plant” in the second Keaton Batman movie.
