Just for giggles, I Googled thug images. This is what I got.

Clearly, it’s a “racial” dog whistle word.

Why wouldn’t they? “Thug” is racially generic. Had I googled for “black thug” I expect the results would have been different.

By the way, the word entered the English language as a name for highway men in … India.
