It seems to have a problem with convincing me my data is going to be more secure if it’s in many different places on random individual’s devices.

Most of the internet is social media/networks and these require critical mass before they’re useful.

Did you read the article, they didn’t hack the coins directly, they used ransomware to extort them. That’s like saying your money in a conventional bank isn’t secure because you paid ransomware extortion with your conventional dollars.

Well lets take Mt Gox as an example, it wasn’t the tech, it was their incompetence. Otherwise the hackers would have nailed everyone.

They didn’t hack in and steal existing bit coins, it’s more akin to a dupe exploit in an mmo. If you aren’t familiar with it I can explain further but to put it shortly they lagged them out with dos attacks and used that delay to redeem existing coins multiple times.

Blockchain doesn’t protect anonymity. It actually publicizes activity in a public ledger able to be scraped.
