So, there is a large NATO summit that takes place in Lithuania from July 11th-12th. The NATO secretary general will travel to Turkey to see Erdogan before that to try and get Turkey to approve Sweden’s joining the alliance.
Everyone knew that Turkey would not agree before the elections earlier this week. And then there’s this whole F-16 package for Turkey that they want. I don’t buy Biden’s claim that they’re “unrelated issues” but leverage is a thing in politics even with ostensible allies.
I’ll go out on a limb and say that Turkey will agree to Sweden joining NATO before the July summit, and then Hungary will. Sweden has clarified some anti Kurdish stuff now and Erdogan doesn’t need it as a political point anymore. And Turkey will get a full F-16 upgrade package and new F-16Vs. And there will be some payoff for Hungary(probably through the EU), but I think it happens. And I think that’s a good move. But I’m curious on other people’s thoughts. Especially on people who get Turkish politics a little more than me. And Hungary.
Also not a surprise, but there will probably be a huge NATO arms commitment. Probably multiple countries giving Patriot batteries and long range munitions. Probably a more defined F-16 promise to Ukraine with actual fighter numbers. Clearly done because they can’t do anything about Ukraine joining NATO.
As the threat of WWIII keeps increasing and the talk of nuclear weapons keeps getting tossed around, I’d welcome Sweden into NATO. “We” need all the help and deterrence we can get to keep China and Russia in their lane. That said, Turkey has always been the wild card and if…they should object…it wouldn’t surprise me if Sweden was chosen over them. Turkey has not been a total NATO team player.
I always thought that Erdogan needed to get past the election to vote in Sweden. I’m sure he’s squeezing out a few more concessions before he gets there but I agree it should all be wrapped up by next month.
Hungary seems to follow Turkey’s lead on things. Once Turkey says yes I don’t see an issue with Hungary agreeing. But they’ll get some nice EU loan rates or something.
What do you mean by that? Turkey’s membership in NATO is not up for a vote and the NATO charter gives every member veto power over inclusion of a new member.
Expelled? For sticking to their guns and protecting their children from lgbtq indoctrination? That is the main beef between Hungary and Sweden.
That issue was the the very one that chronologically separated Putin-the-good-competitor (recall Obama’s “Tell vlad I’ll have more flexibility after my election”) from Putin-the-megalomaniac in the western press. Once Putin signed the bill to protect the children, the west began the narrative of Russia-the-pariah-state. Hungary’s families also choose to protect their children using the so-called Russian-style-gay-propaganda law.
We define ourselves more and more with our posts. As for me, I praise Hungary’s leadership for taking a stand against the indoctrination of children into a hellish and dangerous lifestyle. It’s costing them but if they go down at the hands of the EU degenerates, they will go down fighting. NATO has already capitulated.
I don’t give two ■■■■■ about lgbtq anything and neither do orban or putin. Hungary should be expelled because they are clearly an unreliable partner siding with an adversary against NATO
Apparently 15 EU countries still have ■■■■■ to give about Hungary’s ban on indoctrination of children into the cultural marxist imperative. Sweden is one of them.
Why would Hungary willingly vote to give Sweden more power? Of course, one little country can only stand up to so much of the EU, the US; and their military arm, NATO… all of whom compete to be the wokest of the woke. So maybe you will get your wish… but it won’t have anything to do with any imagined military support for Russia from Hungary.
