In my opinion there should be no statute of limitation on sexual assault, at least when it comes to children. Many of the victims likely never recover from it, leaving permanent emotional scars.
And I don’t think there should be a statute of limitations on creating, distributing and/or the possession of child pornography either.
Did you miss the part in the report that said “finally” how the Church handled this issue changed over twenty years ago. And, it has. Also keep in mind that other agencies had the exact same policy in those days the Catholic Church used. Everyone likes to skip over the part where the psychiatric community at the time recommended seminars and then moving the offender to a new location. At that time, the psychiatric community thought the pedophile could be cured.
The purpose of the Grand Jury was to perhaps create an avenue whereby the statute of limitations can be changed when it comes to sexual molestation of children. In that case it will cover a wide range of cases that could open up against family members, school districts and other government agencies, clubs, the medical profession, and other churches.
We all need to think carefully before extending the statute of limitations. People who rally at the idea of destroying a church may have second thoughts if they (or a male family member) has their lives destroyed and savings wiped out one way or another even with a false accusation that happens as they near retirement. And false accusations happen all too often.
So keep in mind, the issue is not that pedophile and how it is handled continues in the Catholic Church. That issue was resolved “finally” over twenty years ago. The issue is on whether society should extend the statute of limitations so that anyone in society can be accused decades later and be forced to pay to defend themselves at the very least.
is anyone surprised that an a organization in which you must live your life with no open sexual relationships attracts people who desire sexual encounters that need to be hidden?
I know of a few law firms that specialized in mass torts tha took up cases similar this this. I think it was about 10 years ago. There was an issue with the statute of limitations on those cases as well, but many of them went through the system.
Those same firms take on the sexual assault cases against the Dr at Michigan St and the gynecologist at USC.
I think someone will find a way to file civil suits. There are just too many good, experienced lawyers.
