There was no reason to believe the crowd would be as large or as violent as we’ve seen from BLM/ANTIFA riots over the last several years and especially not from earlier this year.
That level of violence has not been seen before other than by leftwing agitators in the past.
No question that they were ill prepared but there’s a broad gulf between what should have been done here and what they were prepared for, and properly so when the lefties marched on the capitol earlier last year.
There aren’t enough white supremacists in the US to add up to the numbers we’ve seen at numerous BLM/ANTIFA riots.

In both crowds the rioters are fringe. But only one of those crowds had an increased police presence
One is much larger and has demonstrated a much greater propensity for arson, attacks on police, the use of incendiaries, explosives, and firearms during their “mostly peaceful demonstrations”.
