The president expressed frustration that his Republican Party could lose control of the U.S. House of Representatives or the Senate in this year’s midterm elections, citing historical trends that have seen the party in power lose seats in the second year of a presidency.
“It’s some deep psychological thing, but when you win the presidency, you don’t win the midterms,” Trump said. He boasted that he had accomplished so much that “when you think of it, we shouldn’t even have an election.”
A great quote from the POTUS, right?
He’s just joking, hardy har har, right? Just poking libs, right?
Your excuse that it’s OK because of some other president, or “I don’t care what he says, I care what he does” will seem pretty weak when he really tries this.
It’s almost a guarantee at this point that Trump will declare the midterm elections illegitimate. That is, unless the GOP holds on to the house. Then it will be a mandate for Trump’s policies.
I get the whole “my guy did it, so it’s ok” mentality. But you’d have to think at a certain point his supporters will find their conscience and recognize that this is bad. Right?
Imagine the weeks of Hair-On-Fire reporting Fox News would have carried, the endless Rightwing office holders and commentators calling for immediate impeachment, if Obama had even made a joke akin to this.
