What those on the Left don’t want to hear is that these international laws on asylum DO NOT trump a nations sovereignty, for example:

When you look at the history of asylum it was developed in reaction to wartime situations, not as a result of poverty, crime or any other negative social conditions that may plague many countries. The legal definition is very narrow and is only intended for unique situations: Refugee status or asylum may be granted to people who have been persecuted or fear they will be persecuted on account of race, religion, nationality, and/or membership in a particular social group or political opinion.
