What Should Donald Trump Say In His Speech Tonight

Public opinion polls indicate that the public opposes Trump’s wall by a margin of between 15-20%. Similarly, polls show that the people want the government to re-open.

The President is giving a televised speech tonight to make his case for the wall (unless he uses the speech to declare a National Emergency). But assuming he is making the case for the wall, what would be the most effective approach he could take?

I am not asking whether the wall should be built. There are plenty of threads on that. Rather, in a “politics” thread let’s talk politics (not policy). A President whose approval rating is underwater is trying to win support for an unpopular policy. This is a tough task. What should he do?

It would be fun tomorrow to see if he followed any of our advice.

I started this post to have a discussion of what would be best for Trump to do. One thing that would be best would be for whoever is acting Chief of Staff this week to gather the staff and get them to focus on running the Executive Branch rather than running their mouths to the press. Leave Sarah Sanders to do that job.

I’ll believe what was in the President’s speech after I hear it. But I’ll also believe that he’ll deny what he said in a day or two if the feedback isn’t great.

How long would it take for DEM’s to pass and deliver a Joint Resolution to the Senate for consideration to END the emergency that Trump just declared? (Measure in hours or days as you wish.)

Once delivered to the Senate, here is the question… Must the Senate vote on the JR? Which would be bad for McConnell as it would put GOP Senators on record (not bad for DEM Senators as we already know they are against Trump). Or can McConnell just pocked the JR and not bring it to the floor like he did with the House funding bill and the Garland nomination?

I’m talking about polls that ask about whether the wall is the solution to the issue of undocumented immigrants and polls that ask about whether the government should be shut down. This isn’t a debate about undocumented immigrants because no-one believes in open borders. (Open borders is a talking point from the Conservative Entertainment Complex that has no existence in the material world. It exists in the same fantasy land as the 3755 terrorists Sarah Sanders says have been apprehended on the southern border.) This is a debate about how to best address the problem. The poll you are citing is irrelevant.

Pretty certain McConell would not allow Trump to be publicly rebuked like that. If that were the likely outcome he would warn Trump ahead of time so he doesn’t take that course. Much more likely is it would force a lawsuit.

Another part of the speech will be to attack people.

A third part of the speech will be him telling many falshoods.

A fourth part of the speech will be about the witch hunt.

Or maybe he’ll stay on topic.

Presidential Harrassment could make an appearance.

Normally I completely avoid these things by any President but this has the feel of history in the making.

Well you’re doing it all wrong. Polls aren’t something you look for a general snapshot of the mood and beliefs of a large cross section of a population. They are things that you spin, deny, cherry pick, misrepresent, and either cuddle up to or completely trash based on if they reflect YOUR beliefs!

I don’t think this will happen. The Democrats will take the issue to the courts. If the Democrats passed a resolution in the House it would die when McConnell refused to bring it to the floor of the Senate. A Supreme Court ruling against the President would carry more force.

A joint resolution is a resolution passed by both the Senate and the House together. It has to pass with a majority of each chamber (House and Senate). Such a JR passed by Congress, would end Trump’s “National Emergency” and any funding/authority derived from it.

If the House of Representatives passes it, I don’t know if McConnell can refuse to bring it to a vote in the Senate given the language of the Federal Law. I’d say in the short term it would have a 70/30% chance of failing in the Senate (first vote), now idea what would happen six months from now with a new resolution.

But what McConnell will NOT want is to have Senators on record voting to keep the shutdown active and having Trump taking money from the military under a “national emergency”. The GOP already has problems with the Senate class up for reelection in 2020 and Schumer would like nothing better than to have such a vote on record.
