The question for this trial is not whether anyone else had a right to self defense but whether Rittenhouse had a right to self defense. If a manic, outraged person is out to grab someone’s gun and chases them down as they flee, then yes, it is reasonable to believe that they mean to use that gun on them. You don’t have to wait for them to point the gun at your head and pull the trigger because there is the possibility they just want to scare you.

So in the middle of a riot, you see a guy walking around with a rifle strapped to his chest…how do you assess if he is manic? How do you assess that the shots he just fired were purely in self defense?

I’m not making a legal argument here, I’m just saying, this is not a super clear thing…I suspect he is going to be acquitted, but I think it’s crazy to hold this guy up as a hero.

Those people he shot would not be dead today if he didn’t show up there with a rifle.

You can’t assault him unless he was breaking the law, if you aren’t absolutely sure and do, you can be held accountable. If you get it wrong, that’s your problem, not his.

Furthermore, if you attack him without provocation (i.e., he was engaged in threatening you or someone else) he has the right to defend himself from you.

Without looking up Wisconsin law I can tell you that the law they charged him under wasn’t applicable. That law said minors can’t carry short barrel rifles, his wasn’t. So if you can prove he did break one, complain to the prosecutor.

The first shooting took place in an auto service parking lot and the other two in the middle of the main street. Chris Cuomo tonight on his CNN show spent some time explaining how Rittenhouse didn’t violate any WI laws and how the judge was within his rights to modify the charges. As Chris said, “You might not like the facts, but those are the laws and they have to be respected”.
