What does civilian oversight mean?

Uh oh. If General Milley is a favorite of the Biden administration, Vindman may be going the way of Cindy Sheehan after Obama took office.

It would make a good thread topic.

Maybe you should start one.

Just like you donā€™t care about General Milley allegiances to China.

What would be the legality of this theoretical attack on China?

Is that theoretical attack better or worse if it is a secret attack?

Letā€™s stay on topic please.

Stay on topic please.

In which jurisdiction?

It has a better chance of succeeding if it is secret.

If the allegations are true, it shoots a hole in media claims that the deep state is a crazy conspiracy theory, while at the same time they are demanding unelected military officials work to sabotage the President.

Huh. This is a pickle.

Military personnel are supposed to be loyal to the country, the president, and the Constitution.

However, if the president is also a mad king, donā€™t we want our generals to act as a guard rail? To prevent the mad king from doing something catastrophic?

For example, on this very forum it is often discussed that if the president were to order that guns be taken from citizens, the military is expected to resist that order.

I think an unprovoked attack on China would be such a catastrophic situation.

If weā€™re going to attack, Iā€™m going to call you ahead of time,ā€ Milley added

A commitmentā€¦in the future.

That is what I am trying to figure.

If a President orders an attack on a country where we are not at war with them or at least falls under the terrible UAMF authorityā€¦ is that a legal order to be followed?

Do you think Milley would actually resist that order if it came from Joe Biden?

Theoretical attacks are always legal, because they arenā€™t realā€¦

This leaked ages ago.

Iā€™m sure itā€™s not because Trump is a gibbering moron with literally no knowledge of foreign policy who couldnā€™t even remember things he was directly told over and over, like France being part of the Common Market.

Correct. So is this a situation where an attack would have never happened in the first place becuase there was no legal basis for ordering it?

It was a situation where an attack would have never happened in the first place because the only evidence of such an attack was in the fevered brain of one General.

I suspect that what we are seeing now is the tip of an iceberg.

He was asked by his Chinese counterpart whether or not there would be an attack.
