What constitutes a "lawful" order from police?

Check your Post Office lobby. There should be a poster, iirc, it’s called poster #7 and it states that photography is allowed in the lobby. Yet there are dozens of videos where cops bully the people taking pictures. Of course these guy go in there and rile them up. Maybe it’s rude, but not illegal. So what happens? The photographers sue. And they win. And We the Taxpayer pay for law suits that never should have happened, because the cops got too aggressive.

There is a difference between the lobby if a building and going office to office harassing people who are just trying to do their job. Also, even public buildings have areas with restricted access. Even janitorial closets where supplies and equipment are kept are locked from public access, and for that matter, government buildings are locked after hours. There has to be a balance between the public’s right to accountability and the employees right to privacy and safety while they work.

There are dozens of videos available where the photographers are photographing right in front of the sign saying it’s legal. And yet they STILL detain. Illegally.

How about when someone is taking photos of a police station from a PUBLIC sidewalk. A building that is in plain view of every citizen? Should cops detain/arrest for that?

There aren’t many places that are inherently private. Even in your own house or yard, there are people who will spy on you from public locations, or locations that you can’t control. I get that privacy has to be created, but the underlying question is: should public employees have the same rights in creating and enforcing that privacy as private sector employees?

I don’t know where you work, but I’m guessing you would not like it if someone walked in off the street into your workplace and started taking videos of you, asking obnoxious questions and demanding to be let into places in your building just because…I’m guessing you or your employer would insist the person leave or the police would be called. Your place of business may be able to ban the person, or even have the person arrested and charged with trespassing if they don’t leave.

This is what I’m talking about when I say privacy and safety. How far should we be able to go in creating a safe and private workplace? How do we deal with people who violate what we create? Should public employees, including police stations not have the same rights and expectations of private sector employees?
