Saddest part is that the USSR built the facility. And the Russians don’t even know how to run it. So they have been forcing the Ukrainian workers to keep it operational with just 1/3 of its normal workforce since the rest have been ā€œevacuatedā€ to more ā€œsensibleā€ areas.

We have a good record of going in getting sucked in and taking years to get out. I would like more people in congress and the media to start asking questions about all the money and weapons being sent in.

My problems is they say the west contributing but it’s America when you break down how much cash is going in it’s not even close.

Second where are the leaders trying to deescalate, are people dense enough to think that Russia is just going to go home and quit, unfortunately it will be a forever war. At what point will the spending be enough for the American people since they have short term memory on the treasury spent/lost on Iraq and Afghanistan for what? Not sure why we need to keep watching that movie we know how it ends.

I read the other day there’s now a 20% to 25% chance of a Tactical nuclear weapon going off that’s too high. I am not sure I know you had family there my in-laws got out they are in Germany now probably never to return as they are signing up for German speaking courses from the government. Some don’t understand those 7 million that left are not going back and there will be no peace without a peace treaty.

You realize that link is just the Ukrainian-language outlet of Radio Liberty, an arm of US government.

If you want to know what the party line is from Washington, the source is fine.

If the link is saying something that runs counter to the official narrative from Washington, it is credible as well.

This report is neither, so it may well be nothing more than propaganda.

I understand your position. I get it.

But what else are we supposed to do? Let the Russians dominate the Near Abroad?

Well Russian forces are definitely amassing in Belarus. Belarus is increasingly sending belligerent missives out towards Ukraine. It looks increasingly likely but sure- Belarus may not send their own troops in. We’ll see.

So how exactly is he like Putin and a dictator?
THAT was the claim, not how he got into power

That last one always gets me.

Anyone that knows how Soviets negotiated knows they didn’t trust anything unless it was in writing (and usually not even then).

But yet Billski would have us believe Gorbachev held a promise (from James Baker, who was not authorized to make it) over the final agreement unifying Germany, which had no language in it limiting NATO growth.

I have zero sympathy for Russia or Putin. Ukraine has every right to defend themselves from the hordes of Russia. I would like to see someone trying to end it, regardless of what the media is saying it’s not all hoorah let’s go over there. 7 million plus refugees, death, injured, bombs.

According to Ukraine national bank unemployment is at 35% and inflation to reach 30% I promise the majority of the citizens can’t handle that they are already the most impoverished nation in Europe. America will be asked to rebuild. The best thing for these people is peace, no one except Macron and Erdogan is even trying for that.

They are not trying and anyone who mentions gets labeled a Russian sympathizer as I said in and earlier post Rand Paul who is anti war throughout is on a black list in Ukraine he is a sitting member on the U.S. senate. We can’t have the last few anti war members of congress berated like that there needs to be more voices like his and his fathers on war.

What needs to be done everything to stop the war - negotiations, ceasefires etc… Russia isn’t going to stop and while it might be humiliating for the Russian military it’s devastating on the average Ukrainian.

Again I get it but there cannot be a peace that rewards Russia with Ukrainian territory.

That just sets up the other powers like China.

It’s a punt.

Are they even trying I haven’t heard anything about any peace negotiation efforts with a major western power or anything whether it’s a cease-fire, land, anything. All I see is pipelines getting blasted and the talks of nuclear war daily nothing on deescalation.

You know as well as I do JayJay they can’t handle this financially there beautiful country is going to be a wasteland after this. It’s not Russian cities being destroyed.

Why? NATO has an open-door policy (it’s in their Charter.) If a country meets the qualifications and wants to join NATO, as a Sovereign Nation, should they not be able to ask to be a member state? Russia even asked to join once … with unacceptable (to NATO) conditions, of course.

I do understand that. But the Ukrainians themselves don’t want to give up. Sure we could stop supporting them, but for geopolitical reasons we really can’t.

I just don’t see a good answer to this. Any answer that stops the fighting now seems to just set us up for a future of even more misery.

We need to get something figured out before 1/3/2023. Our support will be ending shortly thereafter.

The issue are Russian demands in regards to negotiations.

They illegally annexed Ukrainian territory. And I’m not talking about Crimea. That’s a terrible position to negotiate from, especially when the Ukrainian Army is still making gains every day.

The Ukrainian leadership isn’t giving up yet. Nor are the soldiers. Nor are the people. And we shouldn’t stop supporting them until they decide they have achieved a good negotiating position. And for that to happen, the Russians are going to have to be pushed out of the illegally occupied/annexed territories.

This war will end in negotiations. But right now isn’t the time. Because if Ukraine gives up now… their negotiating position will be from a position of weakness.
