USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6) will be decommissioned, stricken and towed to the breakers

USS Bonhomme Richard (LHD-6), which burned for several days this summer, will be decommissioned, stricken from the Naval Vessel Register and will be towed to the breakers, likely in Brownsville, Texas.

The damage to the structural integrity of the ship was just too extensive and the cost and time rebuild the vessel was just too much.

I agree with this decision. The far better option is to procure a new vessel.

They could sell it, as is, to another country.

I doubt anyone would want it other than for scrapping purposes.

If we, the preeminent naval superpower, determined it’s too expensive and difficult to rebuild, why would any other naval power buy it? We spend orders of magnitude more money on our navy than any other country, including the Chinese, the Japanese, and the British.

It’s a dead hulk.

The only reason anybody would want it would be for the scrap metal.

And any country that has the technical and industrial capability to restore the ship would be inclined (as the United States was) to scrap it instead.
