UK online porn age-gate to go in effect July 15th

"An age-check scheme designed to stop under-18s viewing pornographic websites will come into force on 15 July.

From that date, affected sites will have to verify the age of UK visitors.

If they fail to comply they will face being blocked by internet service providers.

But critics say teens may find it relatively easy to bypass the restriction or could simply turn to porn-hosting platforms not covered by the law.

Twitter, Reddit and image-sharing community Imgur, for example, will not be required to administer the scheme because they fall under an exception where more than a third of a site or app’s content must be pornographic to qualify."

Personally, I can understand the effort to keep porn out of the hands of very young children given how ridiculously widespread tablet/smartphone usage has become in their age bracket. And how the consumption of hard-core pornography is likely to have a long-term detrimental effect on the very young.

But this won’t work. At all. If anything it will simply become a method of ID theft for those over the age of 18 and a minor road block for a tech-savvy 12 year old.

If it did work though, would it be a good idea? Is the method simply wrong, or should the internet always remain a place of relative anonymity?

Can’t say i’m convinced the anonymity is going to serve modern society well long-term, regardless of this particular Govt policy. Our mask of anonymity is just enabling the kind of behavior without consequences that is breaking apart modern discourse, imo.

But this isn’t the right first step to take to even begin to address that problem.

this is one of those slippery slopes, i am not happy with.

What is with every dystopian English movie getting closer and closer to the truth

The law is a ******* joke.

Kids will get around any blocks easily, just like they do around blocks for other online age restricted stuff.

I don’t see what the big deal is.

If you have to show your ID in order to use a public bathroom, then you should have to show your ID if you want to visit a website.

They “may” huh?

It is always sad when a government thinks it needs to monitor what the parents should be doing.

We know how to write em.

Yep, they’ll get around it within hours.

But is the initial idea so abhorrent? Every generation has grown up with porn. But none has grown up with todays access.

Yes.

Though there is an argument to be made that a parent can do everything right, but it only takes one kid at school with a device to expose hundreds of others to hardcore pornography.

It’s tricky. How (legislatively) could you address it without fundamentally breaking the internet?

I am far more concerned with the draconian pro-intellectual property scheme Europe is in the process of enacting. That will have a far more significant effect that will this porn block.

Life always finds a way…

I heard Jeff Goldblum’s voice when I read that.

Ain’t that the truth! Every British dystopian movie I’ve ever seen, or book I’ve ever read, has been awesome. And the Swedes and Japanese have horror movies locked down.

Yep. Wait Swedish horror movies. Do tell

I don’t know the answer but the law is trying to address a serious problem that needs to somehow be fixed and…we now know with 100% certainty…parents are failing.

Only now do we know, though?

Ok, ok, ok…I’m the living proof…this happened a generation ago. :sunglasses:

There have been, what, about 26 (a-z) generations born since the rediscovery of the Americas? It seems like every time I ponder what I’m allowed to see of history, that the further back we go, the better off everyone was.

26 generations * 20 years = 520 years - 2019 = year 1499.

My reply is being reviewed before you can read it and I really don’t know why? It’s pure G rated?

You probably used a flaggable word, like “the” or “it”. lol
