UK General Election

Today for the third time in four years my fellow countrymen go to the polls to decide on a new government.

Two of the biggest issues in this election where the NHS and of course Brexit. Farage threw the Tories a huge bone when he declared Brexit Party would not stand in constituencies the Tories previously won.

Boris Johnson is a proven liar and Jezza Corbyn is an old style socialist so both are horrific choices for PM in their own ways. Jo Swinson who is leader of the Lib Dems has spent the election bitching and moaning and making a complete hash of her party’s platform.

The polls are opened at 7am (2am EST) and close at 10pm (5pm EST). If you are interested in listening to election coverage I highly recommend the live stream from LBC Radio.

LBCs coverage starts at 10pm because election day law in the UK allows for zero discussion of the election in the media while polling stations are open. You will see reports about polling stations open and pictures of politicians casting their votes but no discussion of the issues, platforms etc.

Whoever wins I am hoping for a majority government so we are not back here in 6 months.

Alas, because I have lived in the US for so long I can no longer vote in UK elections.

Lucky bastard, I wish I didn’t have to make this Hobons choice of which racist brexiter to have as PM.

Makes me homesick :+1:

This should be interesting.

Your pretty well tuned into US politics so I would be interesting in hearing your take on the UK elections. Any thoughts on Boris vs Jezza?

First time I’ve voted Labour for my MP.

Not exactly thrilled given there’s an anti-semite (or close enough) heading Labour, but given the alternative there aint much choice.

But them i’m in a safe Labour seat anyway so it’s not going to make a difference regardless. And in fairness my current MP has a good shot at taking the reigns away from Corbyn in the long-term, so him staying where he is is fine with me.

Keir Starmer?

I’ve actually been doing a deep dive on Brexit, so mostly how do you even have a hard Brexit without either dividing your own country by putting Northern Ireland on the wrong side of a customs border or having a hard border with the Republic and restarting the Troubles?

Also why is Boris Johnson so terrible that he makes a literal Marxist look good and is it partially because Dominic Cummings is the worst adviser in the history of politics.

Nah, Clive Lewis.

Dunno if he’ll clinch it by any means, but he’s got a shot.

Boris is terrible but normally he’s able to bumble his way through ■■■■■ Looks like he’s definitely been listening to the wrong people, could still win anyway tho and probably will imo.

As for Brexit, there’s no way to deliver what was promised. And what can be delivered both sides will hate. That’s been the situation for years now.

Northampton’s finest, he’s been on the naughty stop in the eyes of the Corbyn cult of late, still a better choice than pidcock or long Bailey.

Did you hear that momentum are sending activists to fincley to stop Luciana Berger from unseating the Tory there? Bastards

Boris sitting down with the Irish Taoiseach and agreeing to the exact EU proposal he’s rejected for years for reasons (?) and then denying even to his advisers that he agreed to that sounds a lot like you know who.

He’s a bit of a plonker but he’d do. And yeah he’s always been treading a fine line in terms of being loyal but not too loyal in preperation for the knife in the back moment.

Momentum being a bunch of ■■■■■ is no surprise. I’d at least hope their lot would be on the outs if Corbyn crashes and burns, but i’m not so certain it would be a clean break.

And telling his supporters it’s the bestest deal!

Won’t work quite as well here but it could work well enough.

Labour are lost for a generation.

I’m in a nice safe lib dems strong hold, but have to admit Swinson has had a mare.

Still weird. What’s it like to live in a world where the Irish are the most politically reasonable people on the British Isles?

. I think it’s finally dawning on the Irish that despite the fact that their history is so dominated by the UK, the average Brit really doesn’t give two ■■■■■ about Ireland, the Irish or our history there.

To us it’s just another place we ■■■■■■ up in a long list of places we ■■■■■■ up.

Are the Tories really planning to sell off the NHS or is that just internet crap I have read?

They are more than welcome to Ulster, though why they would want it is beyond me.

40% of the vote in the last election is lost for a generation.
